I found this bizarre mix of Baratt’s candy in one of the many Irish market’s over in Sunnyside, Queens. I picked up this bag as it looked like a twist on the Bassett’s famous Licorice Mix, which my Dad always ate when I was growing up. Therefore, I snatched it up. The pastel packaging is a direct opposite of the Bassett’s Licorice Mix’s black bag with bold colors. This one feels very...feminine. Lots of pastel pinks and purples, and with the name of “Dolly” I wonder if they refer to a woman’s name or a doll...either way, it’s odd to me.
From the packaging’s exterior, the candy looks like it’s a less intense version of the licorice. Yet, when I opened the bag, I saw nothing that looked like licorice in any form. So these are just some sort of gummi or chewy candy. Here’s what the ingredients say:
“Sugar, glucose syrup, beef gelatin, modified maize starch, vegetable oil, citric acid, natural flavorings, fat reduced cocoa, colours (plain caramel, anthocyanins, paprika extract, beetroot red, lutein), glazing agents (beeswax, pectin), spinach extract.”
So really this says to me these are candies aimed to those who want something naturally colored and sweetened. Someone heath conscious.
There’s two types of these candies here: The soft, white chews with a flavor and gummi bears. The white chews have this odd, soft, starchy and grainy chewy texture. They dissolve quickly in the mouth and just come across as odd.
Oranges ones are orange, lightly sweet and floral and no tang at all.
Pinks are strawberry, with a fruity, berry like flavor with a kick of bubblegum.
Greens are lime, horribly artificial with a tart flavor of floor cleaner. The green gummi bear has the same taste.
Yellow cubes just taste sweet and grainy. No flavor really.
Browns are lightly cocoa.
Purples are pleasantly currant. Very juicy and intensely berry flavored with that signature tartness. It’s the most authentic of the bunch.
Purple gummi bear is beautifully chewy and also has that great currant flavor.
Red gummi bear is strawberry and tastes like those fruit snacks. Very authentic and jammy.
Overall these were and odd purchase. The flavors didn’t really “wow” me, and I suppose they’re nice if you want a candy that’s more “natural”. However, these just felt strange to me and I didn’t finish the bag, much less pick at them when I was desperate for something sweet. They satiated my curiosity, but that’s it.

I’ve heard a lot about these caffeinated gummis when they first debuted on the market a few years ago. Cybele from Candyblog.net gave me these samples when I visited her last, as she had many lying around and wanted me to try them. I admit, I was curious to see what the buzz was about about. Ha, ha, get it? Ok, ok, I’ll stop.
The package is adorable first off, I love the color scheme and the image on the front. The illustration of the truck with loud speakers is a nice touch, especially when paired with the tag line of “No crash energy”. Get it? Ok, late pun I promise. They have guarana extract (natural caffeine) and other vitamins such as B12 & C in them, so it seems they’re really pushing an energy factor about these gummis. One one ounce bag of these apparently is the the equivalent of one energy soda (which is 32 mg of the caffeine).
Opening the package up I saw sad to see that the gummis are bears shaped. For some reason I was expecting trucks. I would have rather had trucks. These bears have really nice details to them, and they reminds me very much of the Albanese gummi bear molds.
So how do they taste? They have a nice orangy-citrus flavor that light and authentic. There’s a tinge of bitterness at the end, probably from all the supplements in it, that leaves an aftertaste in my mouth. The texture is nice, it’s chewy and isn’t too sticky. They were nice, but I found myself having the same issue with these as I do regular gummi candy. Not enough flavor. I like something bold and punchy, and gummi bears always taste watered-down to me. I can see gummi enthusiast really digging these though.
So even tho they taste like other gummis on the market, and with the added benefit of caffeine, I still wasn’t too revved up about them. (Sorry, I had to fit that last one in).
I find it hard to place these in my normal eating routine, because as candy, I don’t eat gummis much, and for the caffeine, I’m happy with a cup of coffee. Still, I’m sure that many of you out there would really welcome something like these energy gummis, so I’d recommend checking them out if you do.

Well, DOTS went and did it again! To follow up with their limited edition Halloween DOTS and their Christmas DOTS, they now have a box of flavors for Valentine’s Day. I’m really pleased to see this holiday edition, as I’m a big fan of DOTS, so it’s fun to give the new ones a try. I really love the packaging design here, as with all of them, as it really captures the feeling of the season.
My delight was dimmed a little when I saw that the cherry vanilla made a return in this box. After tasting it in the Christmas box, it’s a flavor that I can go without. The pairing flavor is Passion fruit Vanilla, which is something I haven’t had in a candy before, so that certainly made up for any anticipation lost on the cherry flavor’s return.
Cherry Vanilla: Just like the cherry DOT from the Christmas variety. Red with a white bottom. The flavor is the same as before: a bright, fruity, punchy cherry with a medicinal edge, matched with a creamy vanilla flavor. Second time around I liked it a bit better, but I still yearn for a strawberry or raspberry instead.
Passion Fruit Vanilla: Pink with a white bottom, the flavor is more raspberry and floral, with notes of perfume. Tasty! I don’t notice the vanilla as much here, which is fine with me since the flavor on it’s own is so nice.
I thought this mix of flavors was much more successful in terms of flavor, than the Christmas variety. I can see these as some adorable toppers for some Valentine’s Day cupcakes, or just arranged in a pretty bowl for your sweetheart.

The candy aisles for Valentine’s Day are always fun to explore. On one hand you get the traditional favorites: boxes of chocolates, NECCO’s Sweethearts candies, Russel Stover’s Cream Hearts, Cinnamon Hearts, and Gumm Lips just to name a few. Then there’s the seasonal limited editions that appear, some old favorites from last year and others the new kid on the block. These SweetTart Heart Gummies are one of those new kids, although I can’t say exactly if they’re rehash from last Valentine’s Day swag because I do not remember them. Sometimes candy just gets overlooked.
The hearts come in a bag whose design still reads “Wonka” to me still instead of “Valentine’s Day”. I blame it on the purple and blue being the dominant colors. There’s a little see through window so you can see the colorful hearts inside the bag.
Smell tart and artificially fruity like Jolly Ranchers The hearts are a little larger than a quarter, and have a dusting of sugar on them. The come in three colors: pink, purple, and a mix of both.
The bite is very soft and chewy, but thankfully not sticky. The flavor is tart and I’m reminded of the sour bunnies I had a few years ago at Easter. The pink is a cherry flavor with lots of artificial tartness, and the purple is grape. Both remind me of cough syrup. They leave a sourness in the mouth long after you’ve eaten them.
If you’re a SweetTarts lover, I think you’d really enjoy these. The flavor of the candy is on par with the originals, and the texture and the size of these gummies are really fun. A sweet way to enjoy a candy you’d love. But for me, they’re really not my thing.

I don’t quite know what to call these. I mean really, who puts “Vitamin” in the name of a candy? Oh, you silly Japanese! Maybe they don’t quite understand the word to being with, and as a native English speaker, I don’t quite get the name “Vitamin Kitchen”. But it’s Engrish so anything goes I guess.
Opening the bag it immediately smells like berry yogurt. Sweet, tangy and berry with a whiff of plastic.
They’re little balls, about the size of hazelnuts. Perfectly round and some a flat-ish on some sides from the way they’re packaged. They’re hard to touch, as they don’t squish in my hand and they’re very smooth and shiny. Despite the image on the package, these are more dull looking and aren’t terribly attractive.
These are very, very chewy. The center has the texture of Starbursts, very thick and dense chew. The flavor is exactly of berries, mainly strawberry and blueberry. It has tart, tangy notes to it. So it’s a nice play of the sweet/sour notes in real berries. Color me impressed! The serving in this bag isn’t terribly big, so these disappeared quickly.
A good example of how an oddly named, and odd-looking candy can still taste awesome. Don’t judge a book by its cover.

I’ve heard about Anise Gummi Bears for some time, and it wasn’t until I was in Reading Terminal Market at one of the Amish candy counters. I saw these in a large bag, and immediately scooped them up.
They’re a good size, much larger than any traditional gummi bears I’ve ever seen. They stand a good inch tall and 1/2 inch wide. These are some hefty black bears indeed!
The texture is awesome. They’re more like gum drops than gummi bears. They have a nice coat of granulated sugar (to keep them warm I guess, like a gummi fut coat?) and secondly, the texture is much thicker, stickier and smoother, and doesn’t have that light bounce that I associate with traditional gummi bears. I like these a lot better.
The flavor is great, it’s very intense and I get strong herbal flavors of anise and licorice on my tongue. It comes across very strong, and I feel almost taste overload on my tongue with the herbal sweetness. It’s like when you overdose your drink with stevia, it is almost too much. Still, it’s a wonderful flavor and I kept wanting more as I finished them one by one.
If I see these again I’m going to pick them up for sure. I think any fan of licorice would really enjoy these.

All Halloween Ghost DOTS, you return again like a bad haunting. Oh! And look! This time you brought friends with you! I heard tales of new flavors of DOTS being released this Halloween, but didn’t see any for myself until the other day in a Superfresh in the area. Then I was lucky enough to spot them in full sized boxes in Rite Aid. Whoot! This is what adult trick or treating is, and I like it. I grabbed a bag of the mini sized version, and this year Ghost DOTS have Bat DOTS and Candy Corn DOTS to keep them company.
Ghost: “Assorted Fruit Flavors” Which flavor? Which ghost? It’s a MYSTERY!” reads the box. I’ve encountered these a few years ago for the first time, and am sort of both pleased and a little annoyed they brought them back. The DOTS are an odd seam foam green color, they look transparent but aren’t. It’s strange. They smell lightly fruity. The first one I had tasted like fruit punch. Second, more like orange. Third, like lime. I’m guessing these are just the normal DOTS flavors, just colored all the same to trick you. While tasty, they just disappointed me since the drawing of the ghostie on the front is so darned cute. I wish the DOTS had faces on them still.
Candy Corn: These feel a tad softer than the others. This DOT is an opaque orange with a yellow bottom, like a candy corn but missing the white tip. They smell odd: a mix of plastic and Eggo waffles. The flavor is sweet and bland at first, then the fake butter flavor of candy corn appears. It’s, kinda strange. It doesn’t taste bad, more like a watered-down candy corn, but with a thicker and stickier texture. Some I tried had a funny cola flavor to it, but it was pretty random and hard to pin down as something that happened with all of them. Oddly enough, I liked them. But then again I’m a fan of candy corn, so many of you probably think I’m crazy to begin with.
Bat DOTS: blood orange flavored: The box is so appealing. There’s a cute bat with a orange wedge mouth leaking juices on it! DAWWWWW! The DOTS are dark black with a dull, opaque appearance. The flavor is awesome. It’s fruity, a little sweet and a little tart, it tastes not quite like orange at points, but has a more berry flavor to it. It reminds me of how fruits snacks tasted when I was a kid. It’s delicious, and I really like it.
I was pleased with this mix, and despite my annoyance with the Ghost DOTS, they’re still tasty and it’s a well rounded mix. A good option if you want to hand out a little something different this Halloween.

Here’s another new candy coming from the wonderful world of Willy Wonka: Sluggles. Oooooo, typing that just made me shudder with the willies. These are basically gummis in the form of slugs. I don’t know about you, but slugs gross me out more than worms do (which are the typical “eww” gummi candy shape). I like how this form is taking the “gross” candy shape to a new level and it’s really fitting for the wacky and creative candy for the Wonka line.
The package is bright, colorful and eye-catching. I like how the shapes and flavors are clearly illustrated on the front. Apparently, these also don’t have any artificial colors or flavors in them. Nicely done Mr. Wonka.
Out of the package the gummis are a nice size, not too big or too small, and they have a nice squish to them. I see many children clamoring over these after school.
Grape: Starts off sweet tart and very berry tasting. The flavor then gets more concord grape notes, while remaining very tart and juicy.
Lemon: It’s nicely tart and has a zesty lemon flavor. I really loved this one as it reminded me of the lemon fruit snacks I traded for as a kid since no one else liked them.
Strawberry: Beautifully sweet and “red” tasting with no medicinal taste or bitterness. It starts sweeter and becomes more tart toward the end.
Orange: Surprisingly mellow with full notes of orange. It’s very juicy and slightly tart, but lacks that zest I expect with citrus flavors.
The Sluggles are cute, tasty, and hassle free. I think they’re be an idea hot-weather candy, good to take on a road trip as they won’t melt and are good at keeping your mouth occupied with the chewing. I especially like how I can share them with my boyfriend and we can giggle about eating slugs and feeling like six-year-olds doing it.

I really feel Mr. Willy Wonka put his thinking cap on for this one. Sour Gummi Mushrooms, how cool is that? I really like this zany and creative twist on sour gummi candies. It feels like a breath of fresh air amongst the other offerings out there (sorry to hate on all you that are shaped like fruit slices, I’m sorry). I was really excited to find these and even more excited to photograph and taste them. So creative, so unique.
The package is colorful and bright and pleasing to look at. The flavors and shapes are displayed on the front, so I immediately know what I should be expecting as flavors in the candy. I can’t lay my finger on it, but something about this pulls me in and begs me to try them.
The Puckerooms are delightful to look at. They’re colorful and the shapes cover a few different iconic varieties of mushrooms.
Each Puckeroom has a dusting of granular sugar on them, which I expect the sourness to come from. The texture is nice and soft with a good give to it, like a proper gummi should.
Grape: Starts off with wonderful flavor of concord grapes. Sweet, slightly tart and very juicy.
Cherry: Very flavorful with a deep, rich, cherry “red” flavor. Thankfully it’s not medicinal at all, just very tart.
Lemon/Orange: My favorite of the bunch. It begins with the tartness of the lemon and a bit of zest. Then it’s rounded off with a nice full sweetness of orange. Oh yum!
I like these a lot. They’re so cute and original and of course, tasty! I finished the bag I had off very quickly and those who I did share them with were all tickled by how cute they were. Hats off to you Willy Wonka.
Cybele also tried them, go check out her thoughts.

I remembered tasting these at the Fancy Food Show last year and was immediately impressed. Traditional gummi bears never really caught me, as I found the flavors to be too bland. These were just the opposite, with bold flavors and interesting ingredients. I vowed to keep and eye out for them in stores, and a few months later I was rewarded for my persistence. I chose the Blueberry Acai flavor over the Green Tea one I found as well. Something about the deep color of these just appealed to me, and I knew I’d have fun photographing them.
Firstly, I think it’s cute how they refer to these as pandas and not bears. They’re adorable to look at with little nubbins for arms and legs and bulgy eyes.
The pandas are beautiful in their simplicity. The gummi texture is just as it should be: nice balance of soft and firm so you get a chew, but nothing too hard so it isn’t a difficult task to separate a head. Yes, I do like to do that sometimes. The flavor is wonderfully bright and fruity. You taste the blueberry and it’s authentic, sweet, deep berry flavor with tart notes to it. I don’t know quite what acai tastes like, but I’m sure it’s in there.
I’ll be picking these up again when my extremely rare craving for gummi bears, er, pandas arise.

Did I just type what I thought I did? Teeth gummis? Now how odd is that? I know gummis come in all shapes, sizes and flavors. I’ve seen everything from fruits, drops, fish, animals and even brains. But teeth? I really wonder who these try to appeal to; children and perhaps maybe a dentist or two? I don’t quite understand this shape for a candy. Especially since I don’t think these are ordinary teeth. On no, because look at the image on the package. These teeth obviously sit on the counter next to your toothbrush and toothpaste. I can’t bring myself to call these dentures, but it’s clear that’s what they’re intended these to be. Chewing grandpa’s chompers does not sound delicious to me. *shudder*
I acquired these as a part of a candy trade from Bulgaria. Which makes the teeth shape feel even stranger to me, as it feels like perhaps there’s a bit of culture I’m missing here to make sense out of all of it. No matter, as long as it tastes good, I’ll eat it.
They smell very bright of strawberry jam with a hint of bubblegum. Each gummi has six teeth and they’re really creepy. The texture is very springy and chewy and therefore it’s hard to sever a pieces with my teeth. The gummis also take a good amount of time to dissolve in my mouth, which is an ideal gummi texture in my mind. The flavor is lightly sweet and nondescript. If I had to pin it on something, I’d say it’s strawberry as I get “red” flavors from it.
Now, I am missing one thing. After eating a few I noticed the package said that these are “jelly filled with fruit flavor”. Jelly? There’s jelly in here? I didn’t detect any texture difference in my mouth, so I did what any curious individual would do and bit one in half to see the cross section. Nope, I see no jelly. I bit another section of the gummi in half, wondering if I missed this magical jelly reservoir, but no, there’s no jelly there either. Interesting.
As odd as these were, I did enjoy them. The flavor was nice, even though it wasn’t remarkable, and I feel a little misled by the package with it’s jelly filled claim. Still, I enjoy these more than the standard gummi bear out there, so I can’t say that these aren’t something you should give a try if given the chance. Maybe you can share them with your dentist on your next visit.

I often have a love/hate relationship with gummis. It really boils down to the fact that I’m really picky about them. My main complains come down to the fact that the texture often isn’t chewy enough to my liking and the flavors are too similar and bland for me to really enjoy them. There’s some that I do return to as they’re better than most, but often I find I am disappointed with gummi candy.
That being said, I’m a big fan of Lifesavers and I remember vividly the commercials in the early 1990’s when the first Lifesavers gummis were released on the market. I begged my parents to let me try them, and when they finally caved in and let me have them, I felt underwhelmed by the flavors. I was big into eating the rolls of the hard candy versions back then, and the flavor in the gummis were no where near a strong. I finished my package and never asked my parents for them again.
Lifesavers recently came out with a new flavor package for their gummis: Island Fruits. I’ve seen them around in two forms: one is a big bag like theo ne pictures above, and another in a single serving roll. The package is very fun and eye-catching, so it’s not a hard one to miss. Not being one to let past experiences to dictate my opinions, I knew it was time to give these another go.
The gummis themselves are adorable. They look like pneumatic Lifesavers, and in the roll they stand upright in a section tray. They’re bouncy and squishy to the touch and I couldn’t help but play with them in my hands before taking my first bite.
The texture is a very nice gummi: chewy, with a good structure so it doesn’t immediately dissolve in my mouth. They come off as very fresh and satisfying.
Strawberry Kiwi: red/pink: Light and sweet and immediately tastes of sweet, fake strawberry. Just like those fruit snacks you ate as a kid. The kiwi flavor shows up as a tart note towards the finish of the flavor.
Mango Melon: orange: Beautifully fruity, floral and of cantaloupe right away. I’m not sure of the mango part, but I’d say this is the best of the bunch. It’s punchy, yet not overpowering and the flavor is refreshing and real.
Fruit Punch: dark red: Starts off very fruity, then gets that slightly bitter and floral taste of Hawaiian Punch. It’s like your mom tried to hide your cough syrup in your morning orange juice. It’s tasty, yet strange as artificial punch flavors always are.
Pineapple: Yellow: Light and sweet, this flavor is very muted and mildly juicy. It doesn’t have that flavor explosion I expect with Lifesavers flavors, but it’s very authentic with nice sweet/tart notes.
I was impressed with these and my early childhood experiences with these are now replaced with this tasty experience. I shared these with my boyfriend who raved about them. He especially loved the Fruit Punch one.

Mason Crows are a classic/retro candy which, unlike most of genre, are actually pretty easy to find. You’d think I’d had tried them sooner because of this. Especially since I love black licorice. Sadly, you’re mistaken. I don’t know what took me so long to finally try these. They’ve been on my “to buy” list for such a long time, and I blame the fact that I mainly saw them in the large movie boxes in the 3-$3 bin in Walgreens. I didn’t have anything else I’d want to buy in the bunch though. I finally took the opportunity when the new Mike & Ike Alex’s Lemonade Stand mix appeared in the bunch.
Crows have quite the history. They’ve been around since the late 19th century and were originally called “Black Rose”. A typo at the manufacturers change the name to “Crows” and has remained that way ever since. They appear black at first, but upon closer examination and the right lighting, they’re actually a very dark green. These licorice gumdrops are very similar to Dots, dome shaped and squishy.
Since Crows look so much like Dots, I was expecting them to be the same texture: so hard and chewy that I’d be picking them out of my teeth for the next couple of day (yes, I exaggerate...a little). So imagine my surprise when I bit into one and having it be terribly soft and supple. I must have gotten a really fresh box and lucked out. Chewing them is so luxurious: they deliver and chew that’s substantial yet so silky smooth. It’s heavenly. The flavor is sweet of molasses at first, then a subtle licorice and anise flavors comes through. But it’s never strong, as it’s a mild flavor and it’s really wonderful. The aftertaste is nice and herbal, like good licorice should be.
I honestly didn’t expect these to be so good. The theater sized box I had went really fast and I expect to be stocking up on them again really really soon.

I love spice beans, so I was curious to give those purposely looked over spice gumdrops of my youth a try. The Brach’s variety are lovely, coming in six different colors/flavors, but no mention as to what exactly those flavors are! The drops themselves are beautiful. They have a great tall dome shape with a even coating of granulated sugar. The quality control on these must be really tight, since I didn’t get a single “deformed” one in the whole bag, most impressive! The texture is fantastic too, a good chew that isn’t too hard or soft. It’s a little sticky, but not overly so. Literally the ideal gumdrop. The granular sugar coating is also terribly fine, it feels and melt just right on your tongue. I believe I’m falling in love!
White: A light fresh wintergreen. Lovely all around.
Green: A bright zesty peppermint! My mouth felt immediately clean.
Red: I can’t place this one. I was expecting cinnamon, but it doesn’t taste hot or spice at all. It just tastes....red.
Orange: Orange. Surprised? I was! I wasn’t expecting a fruity flavor. It’s a good juicy flavor, reminds me of the orange slices Brach’s makes.
Yellow: Spicy, more like a cinnamon/allspice combination. A little hot, but has a good woodsy herbal essence to it.
Purple: It took a few moments of chewing before the flavor came out> It’s clove, but not a “spicy” clove. Instead it’s very creamy and sweet. A pleasant and tasty surprise.
I looked up these flavors on the website afterward to find this out:
“Brach’s(R) Spice Drops are jelly candies in six different flavors and colors sanded in sugar for an enhanced flavor experience. The flavor varieties include; Orange, lemon, cherry, mint, grape and licorice. Make Spice Drops an everyday personal treat, share them in your favorite candy dish or surprise and delight in baking and decorating.”
I find it interesting how the lemon and grape flavors tasting more like spice than fruit to me. Maybe they were tainted by the other spicy flavors in the package? Who knows. Regardless if I was able to correctly identify the flavors, there were really tasty and I am definitely going to finish this bag.

I know, I know. Why am I reviewing more SweeTart candies if I’m not a fan of them? Let’s just say sometimes curiosity gets the best of me and I like to take one of the team. I noticed these by chance in one of the smaller Easter candy bins on the very bottom shelf. I was immediately drawn in by how extremely colorful they were, so into the bag they went.
I was instantly delight by them once I opened the package, for many reasons. They have a nice bouncy chew, and the sugar coating gives it a little texture that feels sandy, but not grainy. The actual form of these candies are really cute, they’re obviously bunnies and the mold for these is very pleasing. The form is recognizable without being too detailed, and the proportions are nice too. I don’t feel the bunnies are overly deformed (like gummi bears with the giant heads). The ears are the best feature. So cute! Probably one of the most adorable Easter candies I’ve encountered yet.
Pink: I can’t lay my finger on this flavor. It’s a little strawberry, a little cherry and a little watermelon. It was a little sweet, a little tart...and lot of “little"s huh? It has a nice red fruity flavor with a good sweet tarty zest to it.
Orange: Very tart orange flavor. It’s strong in the beginning, but then mellows into a light sweet flavor.
Yellow: Lemon, but very floral and soapy tasting.
Green: It tastes subtly of apple, like a nice tart cider. Mainly it’s just sweet with a tarty edge.
Blue: I expected this to taste of blue raspberry, but what a surprise to find that it tasted like a fruity Hawaiian punch! Must be the same blue punch flavor as the jelly bean from yesterday’s review. It’s got a good sour note, with flavors of apple, grape, banana and orange all mixing around. It’s lovely.
Purple: Has a very floral, grape soda like essence. The tartness and the strength of the grape flavor grows as you eat it, which I found interesting. Usually it’s the other way around. I think the tart and grape work really well together.
I liked these a lot better than the jelly bean version. The texture and cute shape certainly play a big part in that though, as opposed to the flavors winning me over. I didn’t finish the bag and ended up sharing them with friends instead.
