Halloween is one of my favorite holidays, which I’m sure comes as no surprise as I run a candy blog. It’s not just the candy however. I love the costumes, the foliage (which I sadly miss out on now that I live in LA), the pumpkins, the stories….I could go on and on! So knowing October was just around the corner, I took a trip to Target to see what candy they had in for the season. I found a few things, one of them was these cute Lifesavers Gummis Spooky Shapes!
It has a fun Halloween styled package, using ooze green and purple color scheme what has gotten popular along with traditional orange and black. In the corner is Frankenstein, Dracula and the Mummy holding trick-or-treat bags. All smiling. Kinda creepy. The box has a strange triangular opening in the back where you pull out the sealed plastic bag that keeps the gummis fresh and safe.
The aroma of the gummis is unmistakeable. They’re Lifesavers all right. It’s the smell I remember from when I was a kid. It’s fruit punchy with a strong hint of cherry. The shapes are cute: smiling jack-o-lanterns, witch heads, black cats, ghosts.
The red flavor is the exact same as the red Lifesaver. It’s cherry, with a strong fruity flavor and a very heavy metallic edge to it from the food coloring. It’s somewhat bitter but full of nostalgia.
Light purple is berry. It starts off tasting like grape, but a floral sweetness takes over which reminds me more of raspberries and strawberries.
Green is bland at first, then the bright, somewhat tart flavors of green apple kick through. It’s tangy and apply, in the Jolly Rancher sort of way.
These gummis just reminded me how much I miss the 5 flavor Lifesavers from my youth: lemon, lime, orange, pineapple and cherry. Nostalgia aside, I liked these flavors and the came across as fun and the shapes were certainly in the spirit of Halloween. The jack-o-lantern one is my favorite!

Everyone has their preferences with candy, and that’s the beauty of it all. I have preferences just like everyone else, but I also enjoy trying everything because I’m a big foodie like that. One candy that’s always in my stash are gummis. Both my boyfriend and I are big fans of gummi candies, so we’re always looking for new kinds and well as keeping the classic favorites around. When I saw these VanSlooten Sun & Fun gummis, I was interested since I’ve never seen anything like these before.
The come in a convenient tube with a removable top. The package design is simple, yet eye-catching. The photos of the gummis are pretty spot on in representing the candies on the inside, so it’s not a sad surprise when you do go about opening the package. The top was a little hard to remove at first, but once I practiced it a few times I had it down. The package smells fruity and sweet, but not of any particular fruit.
Green: Hard to lay my finger on this place. It isn’t lime or watermelon, but it has juicy fruity notes and a pleasant flavor. My best guess is it’s apple.
Beige/Brown (Cola): Sweet with spicy notes to it, like a good cola should. It reminds me more of Pepsi than Coke, as the spice flavor is more predominant.
Red: Sweet and floral, and surprisingly mild. Not really sure what this one is supposed to be. I get soapy notes every so often. Whatever it is I’m not quite sold on it.
Orange: Orange, but more like an orange cola flavor. It has some strange spicy/bitter notes to it that remind me of some orange candies I taste around Halloween.
Green/Maroon: This one is sweet and tasty. Has notes of “red” and berries. I think it’s trying to be strawberry or cherry, but the taste is so nondescript that I cannot place my finger on it.
These proved to be interesting all right. The flavors seemed kinda benign and muddled, but that didn’t stop me from eating them after the tasting. I shared them with my friends, like I do all my candies, and they liked these too. One especially with smitten with their dense, chewy texture. When I really sit down and think about it, I finally touched on what these remind me of: wine gums. Regardless, if you’re a gummi fan, these are a fun variety to try!

Haribo is a brand of gummies that I’m always excited to try. What’s difficult is that since they’re a European company/brand/candy, we don’t get the full selection here in the US. I sometimes tease myself by looking at their German website and the vast selection of candies they offer. I want to try them all! But sadly, unless I take a trip to Germany, I will have to wait and just hope I will come across there domestically someday. I found these Haribo Tropifrutti in Cost Plus World Market, one of the few places I can find imported Haribo products. I was excited about this find since this is a variety I haven’t seen before, so something new finally! Hooray!
Texture is interesting. It’s kinda like a fruit pare inside a jelly bean, with a hard outside and a smooth jelly interior.
Red: Fruity and jammy. It reminds me of a raspberry Popsicle.
Dark Red: This one tastes more herbal and fruity, but not in any distinct way. Just “red”.
Green: Lightly watermelon flavored and that fake, juicy watermelon flavor.
White: Pineapple, bright, juicy and zesty. This flavor is spot on.
Yellow: Oddly enough, this is the most realistic banana flavor in a candy that I’ve ever tasted. It’s captured the starchy smooth feel of a banana perfectly. It’s sweet and have that sweet flavor we recognize as banana. Well done.
Orange: Yay, this one held no real surprise. It’s a mild, sweet, juicy orange flavor. Not too overdone, but not too mild.
Overall, I liked these flavors. They’re different from the typical tropical flavors you get here in the USA and I appreciate having something different. I was really impressed with the banana flavor, so that alone makes this package a winner for me. I also shared these with my boyfriend and friends, and they all liked them and were impressed with the texture. If you’re looking for something different, these are a great gummi treat to have if you’re trying to feel that thrill of flavor discovery.

The last but not the least of my Goody Good Stuff sample reviews. This one is the Strawberry Cream flavor, which I think is a great flavor for gummi candy, but sadly you don’t see it around very often. The most standard one that comes to mind are those that are shaped like strawberries and have that pink foam bottom to them, like these by Trolli. I know Haribo also does a version of them but I don’t think I’ve ever encountered them myself. I think I’ve had the Trolli version of that though. Are you confused now? Good.
Anyways, I digress, and back to the Strawberry Cream gummis at hand made my Goody Good Stuff. These are also in their line of “vegetarian friendly gummies they have. I really loved the idea of these, and was even more excited when I saw the gummis through the window in the pretty package they come in. They’re little berry shapes a little smaller than a penny. There’s two colors: red for strawberry and white for cream. You can eat them alone or together.
See? They’re pretty aren’t they?
Strawberry: This one is more fruity and jammy, with ripe berry notes. Its has a nice sweetness to it. It’s isn’t too punchy or too mild.
Cream:The cream is mildly sweet and full of vanilla flavor at the very end. It’s easy to consider this one just “sweet”.
Together: The berry flavor is less pronounced, and it tastes much sweeter. You get an accent of vanilla towards the end which really makes the flavor feel well rounded.
These are simply adorable and I really like them. I can imagine them in other applications too, for instance I bet they’d be cute as cupcake decorations. So far I am really impressed with Goody Good Stuff, and I look forward to making a purchase to try more of their candies in the future.

Today we have my second sample from the vegetarian gummi maker Goody Good Stuff; Tropical Fruit! Out of the samples I was given, I received gummis from their vegetarian friendly flavors. They also have vegan friendly gummis too, which I was pleased to learn about. I will make a point to try them someday, since I am curious as to how those will stand up to “normal” gummies. Regardless, Tropical Fruit gummis on tap today!
Upon opening the bag the smell is exactly of a can of Del Monte fruit salad. No joke. I even asked my boyfriend to take a whiff just in case I was crazy. He also thought it smelled like a can of fruit salad. The gummis themselves are adorable. They have a nice tropical shape theme to them with palm trees, pineapples, berries and bananas. The gummies had a habit of sticking to each other I noticed. They weren’t sticky in my hands however, and they had a nice weight to them. They are somewhat translucent, if you hold them up to the light you can easily see through them. Much like the Sour Fruit Salad gummies I reviewed last time, they’re super attractive:
White Pineapple: Tastes fruity and of pineapple. Reminds me of the white Haribo gummi bear. It’s juicy and lightly zesty.
Yellow Banana: Starchy and sweet with a light perfume note. A typical banana flavor similar to circus peanuts.
Green Palm Tree: This is a surprise, it’s melon flavored! I was expecting apple. It tastea of fake watermelon at first then mellows into a juicy authentic honeydew.
Red Raspberry: Sweet and slightly taste with an herbal flavor. The “berry” flavor is faint and doesn’t show up until halfway through the chewing the gummi.
Red Strawberry: Has more of a fruity flavor than the raspberry. It’s more jammy, but the flavor is also mild and strangely herbal.
Orange Slice: Juicy and peachy! I didn’t expect that at all. Very sweet with perfume notes.
I shared these with my friends too and received very positive feedback on them. A great option for tropical gummies with no gelatin. I myself didn’t notice any difference in texture or flavor from more “normal” gummies. A must try regardless if you’re vegetarian or not!
