M&Ms Cherry

M&M’s has been very good recently with releasing limited edition flavors for the holidays. There was the Candy corn M&M’s for Halloween, the Mint and Cinnamon M&M’s for the Holiday season, and now that Valentine’s Day is fast approaching we have Cherry M&M’s. This isn’t the first time that M&M’s has tried a cherry flavoring. Way back in 2008 when I was still writing for CandyAddict.com I reviewed the Wildly Cherry M&M’s when they first came on the market. Then they released the Cherry Cordial flavor for the holiday season. Still, this is the first plain “Cherry” flavor for M&M’s, so like anything new I have to try it. I know it’s an impossibility, but I do wish I had samples on hand from the older flavors so I could see how they compared to this new flavor.

In case you had any doubt in your mind, this package lets you know it’s for Valentine’s Day. We have the ladies man “Red” on the front, dressed in a tux and holding out a giant heart shaped box that reads “be Mine”. In his other had he holds two cherries, and the back ground is swirled with hearts. It’s pretty romantic. I am also very pleased that they managed to do a package design without any pink on it.

The M&M’s candies are all red or maroon colored, and vary in size by a little bit. Some are larger and some are smaller.

You can smell the cherry flavor on the M&Ms right away. It’s bright and metallic, with a strong juicy note that has a floral edge to it. It’s a cherry flavor I haven’t enountered much before. The aftertaste is a little medicinal, but by all mean it’s not unpleasant.

It’s funny how the cherry flavor diminishes each time you pop a new flavor in your mouth. I’ve paired these with coffee, and I’ve also shared them with my fiance. At first he seemed hesitant, since he isn’t big on cherry flavors. Soon he was eating them piece by piece exclaiming that they are “Pretty good”! If you’re a cherry lover, I do recommend giving these a try. Like other cherry flavors M&Ms has done in the past, these are tasty if you like red candies!

Cinnamon M&Ms

I was excited to hear that there was a new Limited Edition flavor of M&Ms in stores for the holidays this year: Cinnamon M&Ms. Cinnamon specifically isn’t a specific holiday flavor that comes to mind, as it’s usually combined into “Holiday Spices” that I see so often this time of year. Nevertheless cinnamon is indeed evocative of this time of year, and I applaud M&Ms for giving us a new flavor option for the season. A quick trip to Target, where I believe this flavor is sold exclusively at, and I had these beauties ready to review.

The bag is very festive. With a deep maroon background featuring Green in a cute silver hat and scarf combination. She’s hugging some cinnamon sticks held together with a bright crimson bow. It’s beautiful how it keeps in theme with both the holiday and cinnamon spice theme. Green is always an excellent spokeswomen for the new flavors too, who can resist her?

The M&Ms are pretty and they are larger than the plain ones, but smaller than the peanut or pretzel varieties. They come in two colors, maroon and red. I like how they’re both holiday colors and colors that one often sees with cinnamon flavors.

The flavor is subtle. Which I am relieved about as I was expecting it to be a powerful taste. Instead you first taste the chocolate, with it’s sweet notes and chocolatey tones. Then the cinnamon flavor kinds in as the shell starts to melt and crack. It’s a nice cinnamon flavor, it’s neither hot or spicy. Combined with the chocolate it’s a sweet, holiday flavor that mild but noticeable.

I can see these as an adorable festive candy for a candy dish, or just as a snack if you’re looking for something a little different. I think they’d be very pretty mixed with the Mint ones they also release this time of year. So if you’re interested to see what cinnamon and chocolate taste like together, I recommend trying these as they’re at a very “beginner” level for chocolates with a twist to them. I very much liked this flavor and hope they bring it back next year.

M&Ms White Chocolate Candy Corn Bag

When I heard white M&Ms were making a comeback for Halloween this year, I was pretty excited. I became less excited however, when I heard they were “candy corn” flavored and would only be sold in Wal-Mart. Now that I live in Los Angeles, I don’t have a Wal-Mart that’s close enough to justify a drive to find some candy. I’d have to go up to Valencia or down to Orange County to even get close to one. I knew right away I wouldn’t order them online, since they’re always overpriced. I tried to get my boyfriend (who was out visiting PA at the time) and my Mom to both locate a bag for me. Both of those plans fell through. I had all but given hope on acquiring some to review on the blog here when Jeff, a friend of mine from work, dropped a bag on my desk Monday morning. My hero! What a unexpected sweet gesture. A true example of Halloween spirit among adults.

The package is cute, all decked out in yellows and oranges with Red standing in the dead center with a big candy corn suit on. It’s very iconic. I immediately opened the bag and you get the strong scent of sweetness and butter. Its an interesting scent, and it’s not really what I’d call candy corn. It’s a nice aroma nevertheless.

The M&Ms are very attractive. They have the orange, yellow and white colors of normal candy corn. The color mix is very festive, I have to admit. I was surprised when I first picked them up since, they felt greasy. I can’t figure out why, since the ingredients are good, so I don’tr get why they’d feel so slippery on the outside. Part of me wonders if they added flavoring or scent to them and that’s why the outside feels so slick. It’s a mystery….

The flavor is sweet at first, then a flavor of fake butter kicks in pretty strongly. I think the butter flavor is in the shell, because as soon as I dissolve or crunch it away I then get the full flavor of the creamy white chocolate. It;s buttery and sweet with just a hint of chocolate. The flavor does remind me of candy corn, yes, so the flavors here do live up to their expectations. They’re much richer than candy corn though since we have a base of creamy fatty chocolate. It adds some satiety to the candy, which is nice.

These were tasty, I just wish they were not so buttery flavored and were just the plain white chocolate M&Ms like the “Pirate Pearls” were a few years ago. Because of the candy corn flavor here, you miss a lot of fans who love white chocolate but hate candy corn. So it’s a trick or a treat depends on your flavor preferences!

Starburst Fiesta

I found this package of Starburst Sweet Fiesta in the same store as I found the Skittle Blenders from last week. The discovery took me by surprise, and I was totally excited to give these a taste. I’d seen pictures of them floating around the internet, with no indication of where they were found. I snatched up a roll of these and happy went to the checkout.

I am a long time Starburst fan, so it’s a candy I am always willing to return to. My favorites are the original flavors and the “California Fruits”, the name they went by in the ‘80s when I was a kid, or “Baja” fruits as they called them before they discontinued them. It’s the one with the blue on the packaging in case you remember. Starburst does limited edition flavors every so often. There was Starburst Retro, Starburst Twisted, Starburst Smoothies, Starburst Berries & Crème….yeah, you get the idea. So I am unsure of these Sweet Fiesta flavors are a one in a blue moon thing of if they actually have a permanent place in the Starburst family.

So here we have “Sweet Fiesta” flavors. The packaging is nice, using the purple color to highlight the new flavor and to keep things colorful. The flavor list took some turning of the package to find, but it lists Cherry Mango, Peach Guava, Melon Berry and Strawberry Pineapple. Ok, call me skeptical but none of those really scream “fiesta” to me. Most are more mundane fruit flavors splashed with some tropical ones. Eh, we’ll see once I taste them I guess.

Cherry Mango (red): The taste is sweet and very start at first. it’s sweet, then the sweetness grows into what taste just like cherries and mango, which, mushed together, tasted like tropical punch. Tasty!

Peach Guava (orange): I’m excited about this one. The taste is immediately sweet and juicy at first. The flavor of the peach shows pup and softens the tartness notes. The guava is unnoticeable to be honest, and the flavor gets really tart and starts to taste like pineapple. This isn’t something I was expecting. I was hoping this would be very juicy and tropical tasting, but nope, it’s pineapple.

Strawberry Pineapple (pink): Starts of tasting like the regular strawberry flavor, but with more tart, juicy notes of the pineapple. I have to say that the strawberry is the more dominant flavor of the two, but you still get a nice taste of the other, so it’s a good blending.

Melon Berry (green): Tastes of honey dew melon to start. The flavor is sweet with only a slight tang to it. I get more “berry notes” in it towards the end, and they just taste more “fruity” than of any specific berry. Still the melon part is very nice, with juicy flavors and a floral edge to it. Yummy.

The flavors were good but not enough to “wow” me. I was looking most forward to Peach Guava and it ended up not tasting of the fruit at all, which was disappointing. Still, it’s a solid selection of Starburst flavors, so if you’re a big fan I’d recommend trying them. These were yummy, just not what I was hoping for. Can I have my Baja California Fruits flavor back please?

Despite the fact that “candy season” is now over with the departure of Easter, there’s still new and yummy stuff to be found. The new Twix coconut is an excellent example. This limited edition candy is a fresh new take on a Twix bar and has that new, spring-like vibe to it. I was sent a sample from Twix for this bar, which is lucky for me since I haven’t been able to find it out and about yet.

This Twix immediately stands out from the other varieties out now, which are regular Twix and Twix Peanut Butter (no word on if Java or the very old Cookies n Cream will ever make a return). This coconut Twix has a pretty white wrapper giving it a fresh and tropical feel. The red lettering and green palms on it are a nice color balance and give it a nice splash of color.

Opening up the package, the bars smell like a normal Twix to me. The aroma of the sweet chocolate with a hint of the buttery caramel. There’s a slight hint of starch I pick up on, which must be the cookie part.

I break off a piece and immediately the caramel is fresh and chewy. It strings away even as I pull the broken sections further apart. I bite the caramel to disconnect the pieces and was surprised to find I got the flavor of the coconut along with the caramel. It’s a taste of coconut oil, which is fresh and flavorful. Sadly, no actual flakes of coconut in here, which would have really made my day. The texture of the Twix is awesome, as your teeth sink into the fresh caramel first then hit the crunchy cookie bottom. The coconut flavor blends nicely in, but it gets a little lost for moments in the caramel and cookie, but it’s certainly the most powerful flavor in the bar and it’s the one that lingers on your palate afterward.

This Twix bar is tasty for sure, and a must for any coconut lover. I am seeing more and more coconut flavored stuff on the market these days, which I find exciting. I look forward to when they take it to the level of Almond Joy or Mounds, by adding real coconut in there. Regardless, if you’re looking for a neat twist on an original Twix I’d recommend this as it’s flavor, tasty and fun.
