Vosges Peppermint Candy Cane Bar

peppermint candy cane, 62% dark chocolate

the chocolate is very dark with a subtle sheen to it. you can easily see the bits of candy cane spattered on the back of this bar, as well as mixed inside. it smells overwhelmingly of peppermint.

The flavor is immediately this marriage of sweet, rich chocolate and the powerful refreshing flavor of pepermint and the crisness of the candy cane bits. This bar is very rich and intense, and I wanted a glass of water once I was done wit hit.

In regard to the many other peppermint chocolates I’ve had this holiday season, this one was by far the most sophisticated. It has all the elements beautifully in texture and flavor balance.

Vosges Peppermint Candy Cane Bar

Vosges is a gourmet chocolate company located in New York City. I first discovered them a few years ago when the company had their unique chocolate bars in store fronts in the city. I was into trying strange flavored chocolates back then too so I latched onto the company chocolates right away. Nowadays, I’m happy to say they’ve expanded the availability of their products and you can find them in most Whole Foods stores. That’s where I found this bar to review.

I believe this bar is a Limited Edition flavor for the holidays, but with all the other Christmas candies this year there’s just not enough room to fit them all in. So I hope you don’t mind some of these candies are a bit belated for the season.

One of the most popular flavors for the holiday season is peppermint, no two ways about it. So it’s fitting that Vosges makes a peppermint bar to go with their normal line of chocolate, even by comparison this flavor is way more mundane.

The bar has a nice subtle sheen to it. You can see the bits of smashed candy cane in the back of the chocolate bar, and inside it as well when you break off a piece. The bar smells overwhelmingly of peppermint, which is to be expected since it’s such a potent flavor.

The chocolate is rich, mild and sweet and really provides a beautiful base for the candy cane bits. The chocolate is a 62%, so it’s neither too dark nor too sweet, which is a nice balance to go with the peppermint. The candy cane bits are exactly as you’d expect them: crunchy, sweet, and pepperminty. There’s no surprised in this bar, just a feeling of luxury as this is the most quality peppermint chocolate bar I’ve ever had.

Such quality doesn’t come cheap. These bars run anywhere from $5-$7, so it’s pretty pricey compares to your more affordable peppermint bars out there. You can really taste the quality difference here, so it’s your call how much you love this type of holiday treat each year.

See's Deep Dark Chocolate Truffle

I am sad! Today I review the last of the See’s Limited Edition flavors for the year. Hopefully it’s a trend they continue to keep up, but for now it’s the last one. Today’s offering was sent to me as a sample, and it’s Deep Dark Chocolate Truffle. The description reads: “Dark chocolate blended with semi-sweet cocoa powder and cream drenched in premium dark chocolate”. Yummy!

First off, my apologies for a lack of an original photo this entry. I am currently driving cross-country because I am moving to Los Angeles. I received these samples once all my photography equipment was packed up. So for once I’m using a photo given to me from See’s.

See's Deep Dark Truffle II

The truffles are circular in shape, and are about 3/4 of an inch tall. A nice little chocolate tower, as so to speak. The chocolate enrobing is a gorgeous deep, rich chocolate color with three chocolate stripes decorating the top. The aroma of the truffle is a very deep and rich chocolatey scent, full of nice notes of cocoa, coffee and cream.

The first bite is lovely. The chocolate shell easily gives way to a rich interior which is a truffle in the best sense. It’s both dense and creamy, with a wonderfully smooth texture that isn’t slick or greasy. The dark chocolate is beautifully chocolatey, with notes of coffee, cream, and hazelnuts. There’s no fruitiness or acidity in this flavor, which is what some people struggle with in dark chocolate. Overall it’s incredibly decadent and wonderful flavor, which is a testament to Sees since the flavor is really simple, yet it’s executed beautifully.

Out of all the flavors I tried out of this limited edition run, I think this one falls in second place as my favorite after the Black Forest Truffle. This is a flavor that really captures the idea of a truffle in my mind: something that’s incredibly chocolatey and rich to eat. I can’t wait to have one with my coffee in the morning, I’d imagine it’d be a great combination. So if you can find these, I recommend them!

CONTEST: I have another two gift certificates from See’s to give away! It’s for one pound of these chocolate, and can be used in their stores or by phone at (800-895-7337). So how do you enter? Please comment on this post by Friday the 29th at noon, PST (since I’ll be on the west coast now!) and share your favorite type of Halloween candy. I’ll choose a winner randomly from those who enter. Best of luck!

See's Dark Rum Raisin

My newest sample of See’s Candies’ September limited edition candy has arrived! This month’s flavor is Dark Rum Raisin, and I’m really excited to try it considering how yummy last months flavor was.

Rum raisin is a flavor I don’t get to have too terribly often. I’m not a big drinker of alcohol, so my experience with actual rum is fairly limited. There’s been a few tastes of rum raisin ice cream in my childhood, a piece of fruitcake here and there (my Dad is a fan of them), and then of course a sip from drinks offered by friends.

The candy is rectangular, with a beautiful drank rippling of chocolate on top. It smells of the sweet dark chocolate and no hint of the flavor inside.

My first bite reveals a creamy, beige colored interior studded with raisins and candied cherries. The flavor is of rum right away, with it’s warm, buttery, alcoholic taste. There’s not burn here thankfully, but the flavor is authentic as far as I can tell. The raisins and cherries are tart and fruity like I expect them to be. The chocolate serves to round out the candy with its deep, rich, slightly sweet chocolatey flavors and keeps the rum from being too intense. It’s beautifully balanced and I find myself enjoying it a lot.

If you’re a fan of rum raisin flavors I highly suggest you seek these out. It’s a great take on this flavor in a nice, compact small dose. The Black Forest Truffle from last month still holds as my favorite so far, but this piece is also a delight to indulge in, and I appreciate how I am now more familiar with this flavor.

CONTEST: I have another two gift certificates from See’s to give away! It’s for one pound of these chocolate, and can be used in their stores or by phone at (800-895-7337). So how do you enter? Please comment on this post by Friday the 24th at noon, EST and share your favorite See’s flavor if you have one. I’ll choose a winner randomly from those who enter. Best of luck!

MilkyWay Simply Caramel Bar Wrapper

I barely noticed this version of the MilkyWay bar when it first came out. I didn’t see any in store displays for it, nor did the packaging catch my eye. Which is odd really, since it looks very different from the dark brown wrapper of the original bar. It’s called the “Simply Caramel” bar, which confused me at first because I didn’t know what it meant. It was so straightforward that I didn’t know what to make of it.

So what is exactly the “Simply Caramel” bar? Well, there’s a giant band of caramel in the middle, enrobed in chocolate. It’s that simple.

MilkyWay Simply Caramel Bar

One thing’s for sure. I had a blast photographing this bar. The caramel is not liquidy like a Caramello. Instead, it’s wonderfully stringy and smooth.

It smells sweet and of caramel and cream with notes of chocolate, exactly what I was expecting once I had this bar out of the wrapper.

The caramel is smooth and sweet, with nice notes of cream and burnt caramel. It’s a nice thick texture and isn’t too sticky. The chocolate is nice and sweet with good milk notes and a good chocolatey overtone. What can I say, I’m impressed!

If what I’ve said hasn’t convinced you to try one yet, consider this: my Mom hates limited edition candy bars with a passion. She thinks that the original candy bars are fine the way they are and all these variations are unnecessary and a shame to the originals. Yet, when I got her to try this one, she adored it. Just goes to show you don’t know until you try it!

See's Coffee Walnut Caramel

The newest limited edition flavor from See’s Candies has just been released in stores this past Friday, the 16th! I would have gotten this post out sooner if I had been home to receive my free samples of the new flavor: Coffee Walnut Caramel. I had gone out of town for a long weekend and thankfully the chocolates were waiting for me upon my return! These are not available by phone or online ordering, so if you have a See’s Candy Store nearby, you’re in luck!

These chocolate sound like a tasty mouthful, don’t they?. Coffee, walnuts and caramel? That’s a lot of stuff right there! I opened up my sample box and was greeted by rows of lovely, square, chocolates with beautiful rippled tops from the milk chocolate enrobing. Picking one up, it’s much heavier than I expected, and much taller too. Usually these sort of chocolates are about 1/2 inch tall of so, these are more like 3/4 of an inch. Impressive to say the least. The smell is sweet, creamy and very inviting.

Picking up a piece in my had, the chocolates are well formed. I take a bite and find that the texture is dense, like a thick and chewy fresh fudge. The caramel isn’t watery or flowing but more solid, again, like fresh fudge.

The caramel is wonderful thick and chewy, and not the least bit sticky. it has nice toasted sugar notes with a well rounded buttery taste. the coffee flavor is seamlessly blended in, and you get a good roasted, nutty, coffee taste mixing in with the buttery sweetness.

The walnuts are large chunks sprinkled in the caramel. they are extremely fresh with a nice, meaty chewy to them. They have that buttery, nutty, slightly tannic flavor and it’s awesome. The milk chocolate coating proves a flavor that binds all the elements while adding a nice sweetness to it.

A really awesome and flavorful chocolate bonbon here. These are going to be really popular when I share them with friends.

CONTEST: Ok, I have a gift certificate from See’s to give away! It’s for one pound of these chocolate, and can be used in their stores or by phone at (800-895-7337). So how do you enter?
