MilkyWay Simply Caramel Bar Wrapper

I barely noticed this version of the MilkyWay bar when it first came out. I didn’t see any in store displays for it, nor did the packaging catch my eye. Which is odd really, since it looks very different from the dark brown wrapper of the original bar. It’s called the “Simply Caramel” bar, which confused me at first because I didn’t know what it meant. It was so straightforward that I didn’t know what to make of it.

So what is exactly the “Simply Caramel” bar? Well, there’s a giant band of caramel in the middle, enrobed in chocolate. It’s that simple.

MilkyWay Simply Caramel Bar

One thing’s for sure. I had a blast photographing this bar. The caramel is not liquidy like a Caramello. Instead, it’s wonderfully stringy and smooth.

It smells sweet and of caramel and cream with notes of chocolate, exactly what I was expecting once I had this bar out of the wrapper.

The caramel is smooth and sweet, with nice notes of cream and burnt caramel. It’s a nice thick texture and isn’t too sticky. The chocolate is nice and sweet with good milk notes and a good chocolatey overtone. What can I say, I’m impressed!

If what I’ve said hasn’t convinced you to try one yet, consider this: my Mom hates limited edition candy bars with a passion. She thinks that the original candy bars are fine the way they are and all these variations are unnecessary and a shame to the originals. Yet, when I got her to try this one, she adored it. Just goes to show you don’t know until you try it!

See's Coffee Walnut Caramel

The newest limited edition flavor from See’s Candies has just been released in stores this past Friday, the 16th! I would have gotten this post out sooner if I had been home to receive my free samples of the new flavor: Coffee Walnut Caramel. I had gone out of town for a long weekend and thankfully the chocolates were waiting for me upon my return! These are not available by phone or online ordering, so if you have a See’s Candy Store nearby, you’re in luck!

These chocolate sound like a tasty mouthful, don’t they?. Coffee, walnuts and caramel? That’s a lot of stuff right there! I opened up my sample box and was greeted by rows of lovely, square, chocolates with beautiful rippled tops from the milk chocolate enrobing. Picking one up, it’s much heavier than I expected, and much taller too. Usually these sort of chocolates are about 1/2 inch tall of so, these are more like 3/4 of an inch. Impressive to say the least. The smell is sweet, creamy and very inviting.

Picking up a piece in my had, the chocolates are well formed. I take a bite and find that the texture is dense, like a thick and chewy fresh fudge. The caramel isn’t watery or flowing but more solid, again, like fresh fudge.

The caramel is wonderful thick and chewy, and not the least bit sticky. it has nice toasted sugar notes with a well rounded buttery taste. the coffee flavor is seamlessly blended in, and you get a good roasted, nutty, coffee taste mixing in with the buttery sweetness.

The walnuts are large chunks sprinkled in the caramel. they are extremely fresh with a nice, meaty chewy to them. They have that buttery, nutty, slightly tannic flavor and it’s awesome. The milk chocolate coating proves a flavor that binds all the elements while adding a nice sweetness to it.

A really awesome and flavorful chocolate bonbon here. These are going to be really popular when I share them with friends.

CONTEST: Ok, I have a gift certificate from See’s to give away! It’s for one pound of these chocolate, and can be used in their stores or by phone at (800-895-7337). So how do you enter? Please comment on this post by Friday at noon, EST and share your favorite See’s flavor if you have one. I’ll choose a winner randomly from those who enter. Best of luck!

Morinaga Caramel Pumpkin

As anyone who knows me in real life would tell you, I may be enthusiastic about candy, but I’m head over heels crazy for pumpkin. I adore all things pumpkin and it’s really one of my favorite things to eat. This is why I was super excited when I saw this box of Caramel Pumpkin candy in Sunrise Mart in New York City. Pumpkin and candy rolled into one? Sign me up!

From the look of the box, I was expecting this to be one of the many “reverse Pocky” candies that the Japanese love so much. Essentially, it’s a biscuit stick with a hollow inside that’s filled with a flavored chocolate. Although, I would have realized that this is not the case here, if only my Japanese was a bit better.

The sticks come in sealed packets of two, so you get a small about to snack on without overdoing it. They’re golden in color and smell sweet and of squash. A good sign!

The texture is not crispy like I would have expected, but instead it’s dense and creamy. It’s more of a tube of chocolate, than a hollow biscuit with chocolate inside. Interesting.

The flavor is unique, but in a good way. First you taste the sweetness, then the roasted flavor of acorn squash comes through with it’s sweet, yet earthy flavors. Then you taste the caramel, which adds a nice burnt sugar taste to it. It reminds of of oven roasted acorn squash like my Mom makes, as she melts some butter and brown sugar in the center. The aftertaste is sweet, slightly squashy, but more of the caramel flavor. I have to say, I like it a lot!

This is an excellent example of a great pumpkin candy, and I’m pleased to have found it to try. It’s really yummy and it satisfies that sweet pumpkin craving I get sometimes (yes, I realize that’s strange). So if you want to try something a bit different, I’d give these a go.

Munchies Package

Who has the Munchies? I certainly do, well, did, before I wrote this review. Aside from the common snack attack, Munchies are a candy available in the United Kingdom and made by Nestle. I didn’t know quite what they were at first when I spied them in an import store. I was certainly perplexed by the long square-shaped roll. What could possible be inside? Plus, the name is so cute!

I admit I find the packaging very fetching, and I like the fact they display the nutritional facts very prominently on the front. I’m downing 273 calories by eating these, yay!

So what exactly are Munchies? My prompt tearing into the package to find out quickly answered my question. They’re caramel filled chocolates with a small crunchy bit of shortbread biscuit on the bottom. The size and proportions are similar to Rolos, but these are square with line designs on top. Dare to be square!

Munchies Bitten

The chocolate is sweet and slightly malty tasting. The caramel is flowing and sticky and delivers a good burst of extra sweetness with some milky notes. The shortbread center is crunchy and very buttery and blends beautifully with the caramel and chocolate. It’s a great texture contrast: smooth chocolate, chewy, thick caramel and crunchy biscuit.

I was impressed with sturdy these are, as they survived a trip from the UK to Los Angeles where I bought them. Then back in my suitcase to New Jersey, all the time remaining intact.

The flavors aren’t anything especially more special than anything I can find on candy shelves here in the States. But the addition of the biscuit base does make them unique enough for me to pick up more next time I see them.

DAS Lollipops

DAS Foods, makers of the DAS Caramelini that I reviewed last year, have recently unveiled a line of new all natural gourmet lollipops. There’s been a big buzz about them, especially since they were one of the main product spotlights of the All Candy Expo which took place in Chicago two weeks ago.

The lollipops have a cute tag line of “What’s your Flava?” and come in four unique flavors. One of which, the Man Bait flavor, has bacon in it. This isn’t my first time having a bacon lollipop, so I was interested to see how it compared to my previous experiences.

Each lollipop is small and delicate, about the size of a quarter and remind me of the pops I see at various candy bowls in doctor, dentist and bank offices. The wrappers are colorful with bold lettering and modern-looking black and white illustrations of the ingredients involved.

Man Bait: maple bacon: It looks like a very light, almost completely opaque, brown color with flecks of the red brown bits of bacon. So yes, there is real bacon in this. The flavor is first of the authentic flavor of the maple base: sweet and toasted. Then, a smokiness from the bacon shows through. It’s meaty, salty, and has that nice honey-ham flavor to it. It reminds me more of jerky than bacon, but its wonderful sweet/salty flavor is addicting.

Naughty Ginger: lemon & ginger: Also delicate in color it’s a light yellow brown color that’s opaque until held to a light. The flavor is softly sweet, with a hint of ginger. But don’t let it fool you, as the ginger flavor grows and gets quite spicy and powerful. The lemon sits right under the ginger taste, with a sharp tartness that compliments the ginger nicely. The whole lollipop is spicy and gives your mouth a good warm burn. It’s not for those who aren’t into eating ginger straight because of its intensity.

Caramel Me Happy: salty caramel: Opaque and a pretty dark brown color. The flavor is of sweet, toasted milky flavors, a little burnt sugar, and at the finish a good light kick of salt. The flavors are nicely balanced with neither one overpowering the other, and the saltiness is nicely mild so it doesn’t overpower the sweetness. I also gets notes of gingerbread at moments. It’s a really simple concept, yet complex flavors.

Fab-O-Pom: orange & pomegranate: This one is especially beautiful! It’s light pink in color, like grapefruit juice. You can see pomegranate seeds, dotting all over inside the candy. The flavor is immediately fresh and juicy. It tastes lightly of orange at first, almost like orange flower essence because it’s a very light and floral flavor. The pomegranate is hard to identify exactly, but it adds a distinct tartness to the lollipop which is very nice. It’s so similar to a refreshing fruit lemonade. Out of them all this one is my favorite.

A nice line of lollipops, especially for those who crave something unique. I bought a couple of the Man Bait and Caramel Me Happy for a gift a couple of months back when they were first released, and the recipients were totally smitten with them.
