Halloween Candy 2012 025

Out of all the Halloween candy that I’ve found, this is the only one that’s actually fruit flavored. Have you realized that so much of Halloween candy is chocolate? I know there’s candy corn to balance it out and a handful of Halloween shaped gummies, but mostly it feels like it’s chocolate. There’s certainly a reason for this, as chocolate is immensely popular and well loved. Even as a kid I ranked a lot of the chocolate candy I’d get at Halloween as the “favorites”. This is a big reason why this mix of Mike & Ike Mummy’s Mix stood out to me. Yes it was new, but also it’s a fruity candy and that stood out to me.

So, I’m a little sad to report that the only thing that’s Halloween themed with this candy is the packaging. Once you open the box you have normal Mike & Ike’s in your hand. I’m not complaining mind you, I just don’t want my readers to expect more when there isn’t more. Right now there’s a big ad campaign regarding Mike & Ike who are splitting up right now, but maybe they’ve come back together and made peace for Halloween since both their names are proudly side by side here. This is a movie theater sized box and once you open it, it’s opened. There’s no extra plastic or foil bag in here to help contain the candy, only the box.

Lemon: Oh, how I love lemon! This flavor is only lightly tart, so it’s a good lemon flavor for those who prefer the sweeter flavors. You do get some citrus flavors, but they are very bright and are accented with the sweetness. Not as tart as I’d like, but very tasty.

Orange: The flavor is immediately really juicy and sweet. You get a nice sweet/tart notes of orange that gradually fades to just sweetness. Very tasty and great flavor.

Grape: The candy is very dark in color, it almost looks black. The taste is very authentic grape, I’m pleasantly surprised. It’s like grape jam, but more sour. I even get hints on wine in the sour bits, I’m please with how complex this tastes. Normally I’m not a big fan of grape flavored candies, but this one is really awesome.

Lime: Lime can be a flavor that’s really hit or miss. Thankfully this flavor is very good. It doesn’t taste of floor cleaner, but you do get the notes of lime zest. Like the lemon, they’re made much softer by the additional sweetness. That makes this also very friendly to people who prefer the sweeter flavors. This is much tastier than I was expecting.

Raspberry: I have to hand it to Just Born, I’m glad they went with a different flavor other than cherry for the red. The flavor is sweet and I am strongly reminded of jam. It has a rich sweetness rounded out with some tart notes and some nice floral berry flavors. It’s good, but I like the lemon, grape and orange flavors way more.

I am really pleased with this mix! I am a fan for sure. I think if you’re more of a fruity candy lover, you should certainly try these out. I can’t say that the actual candy is the most “spooky” with all the rainbow colors, but it tastes great and that’s what really matters.

Sunkist Orange Slices

I love candy orange slices. When I was a kid I was allowed to grab a few from the bins when I went to the grocery store with my Mom. To this day they’re a candy that I enjoy. I’m a little sad to find that they’re getting harder to find nowadays, but I hope that’s just the candy trend right now and hopefully they’ll stat showing up more frequently. So imagine my excitement when I was contacted by Jelly Belly asking if I’d be interesting in trying some samples to review. Being a big fan of jelly belly, I said yes, but I didn’t know what they planned on sending to me. These Sunkist Orange Slices where in that package.

I admit I haven’t had the Sunkist version of orange slices, only Brach’s and some other “store brands” whose name I don’t remember at the moment. These orange slices are smaller and softer than the ones I’m used to. They still carry the same shape with the rippled top of accentuate the orange slice shape. These are most squishy to the touch, and the granulated sugar is has a nice texture to it.

The flavor is similar to the Sunkist Gem orange flavor. It’s bright and fruity, with great sweet and zesty accents to make it come across as very “juicy”. Because these are smaller and softer, they’re very “pop-able”, you find yourself eating a bunch instead of stopping at one or two. Very yummy and very addicting.

Even though these are smaller I can easily imagine them as additions to vanilla ice cream and as decorations on top of cupcakes. They’re perfectly addicting as is but I can’t help but think of creative ways they could be used in other sweets and desserts. I think the orange slice is a really overlooked classic candy, and these Sunkist Orange slices are a wonderful addition to the genre.

Welch's Filled Licorice

It’s always exciting to know that there’s new candies coming out. Yes, we all love our classic candies like Snickers, Starburst and Kit Kat. For me, waiting for a new candy to hit the stores is a great treasure hunt. When I saw the press release for these new Welch’s Filled Licorice candies, I was excited and planned on finding them in stores. I wasn’t sure of exactly when they were supposed to be released, and such things vary depending on where you live. Then, Welch’s PR was kind enough to reach out to me and asked if I’d like to try some samples. Of course my answer was yes, and today I have those samples to review for you.

To start, I really like the packaging on these. The wrapper keeps the licorice sticks all in a straight line and upright without making the package too stiff. The packages are very colorful and you immediately know what flavor you’re after just by seeing them. They’re iconic and functional.

Welch's Filled Licorice Strawberry

The strawberry smells fruity, and also a strong hint of malty ness to it. The flavor is good the outside tastes similar to twizzlers. It’s slightly fruity and has a wheaty taste to it. The filled center is where this candy really shines. The filled center, filled with a (wha I’d imagine to be) a more shelf stable jam. It really takes the flavor od this licorice to a whole new level of flavor intnsite. It really gets flavorful, really really flavorful. It’s a juicy strawberry and a smooth, soft chew.

The licorice twists are really plaible. Super soft, it easily bends into a circle and nothing leaks out.

Welch's Filled Licorice Grape

The grape licorice bag smells intensely of grape juice. Tart, sweet and intesely fruity. The flavor reminds me of a very fruity grape tootsie pop. The wheat chew part has a suble flavor. Again, the filled center really brings this candy to life. The jam filled center is extremely fruity and flavorful. It really brings the whole licorice chew to life.

I appreciate how unique these Welch’s filled licorices are. They took a, what I felt, common problem with some licorices whose flavor just wasn’t intense enough. Welch’s found a unique way to solve the problem, and I must say they came out with something that I really enjoyed! Both my fiance and I polished off our bag of each flavor easily in one sitting. They weren’t too heavy and again, really tasty. Bravo Welch’s.

Newman's Own Tangerine Licorice Bag

I was pretty excited when I saw these Newman’s Own Licorice Twists in the store the other week. I bought these Tangerine ones along with the Black Licorice ones I reviewed last time. Licorice twists are a candy that I really want to love, but they always disappoint me by being so flavorless. Here’s hoping that these will live up to how nice they look!

These twists are really pretty to look at. They’re a nice orange color with a hollow center. I can see these being some adorable lemonade or cocktail straws. They have no aroma, but they are soft to the touch, yet firm at the same time so they have a nice chew to them. The flavor is a nice tangerine. It’s certainly not orange. It has a nice sweetness with a really solid tart edge to it. The chew keeps you busy, but it isn’t hard. it does ask for more effort than a Twizzler. Tastes much better too.

I am really pleased with these. They’re so tasty! Both my fiance and I agree that these are super yummy. They package has 5oz of them in there, and I wish I had counted the twists before I started eating them. It’s a good amount I feel. If you’re into these types of candy, I recommend you check them out!

Newman's Own Black Licorice Bag

I found these licorice twists in Whole Foods the other week. Usually I skip over the candy aisle in that place, since I’ve tried most of it and new products show up rarely. I was lucky to pass through and see these twists by accident. I immediately scooped them up, since I don’t get to have good licorice things often. I also really love the idea of licorice twists, but have yet to find a kind that I truly enjoy.

Newman's Own Black Licorice

The twists are very pretty. They actually look like vine charcoal. They almost have a dusty look to them. They smell faintly of licorice.

I am happy to see that molasses and licorice root are both listed on the ingredients list. I take my first bite and I immediately love what I’m tasting. These are very molasses heavy licorice twists. They have a nice thick chew, and a really silky licorice flavor. It’s only slightly herbal, with a nice sweet smoothness from the molasses. These are way better than any type of mainstream licorice twist I’ve had to date.
I really am smitten with these. If you’re a fan of licorice at all, or are looking fora good licorice candy to try for your first time, I really recommend these. Yum!
