Vosges Bapchi's Caramel Toffee Bar

Today we have yet another Vosges bar (starting to see a trend here?) that I’ve recently encountered. This flavor pairing sounded more tame than their other offerings, that use curry, teas, mushrooms and seeds for flavor. Everyone knows and understands toffee for a flavor in candy, so I’d like to think that this is more of a gourmet candy bar, as opposed to a gourmet adventure, which the stranger flavors tend to be.

This bar is a dark milk, at 45% cacao, and it’s mixed with sweet butter toffee with walnuts/pecans. The bar is a nice milk chocolatey brown colors (lighter than most) and you can see the bits of the toffee and nuts int here. The bar smells creamy and a hint of butter.

The flavor on this one is incredible. Your first taste is the very smooth creamy milk chocolate, then a burnt of buttery toffee comes in. In the middle there’s a rise of saltiness from the nuts and toffee which really gets mixes well with the sweetness of the chocolate. Then the flavor gradually melts away leaving behind a buttery, smoother flavor that lingers on the tongue. The toffee and nut bits are small and crunchy, so none of them get stuck in your teeth.

This is a really great gourmet bar for anyone who is too squeamish to try any of the other more unusual flavors that Vosges offers. Sometimes the simplest flavors are the best.

RitterSport Butter Biscuit

More Ritter Sport reviews, yay! I am trying to work my way through the flavors I haven’t had before in hopes of discovering some new favorites. Today’s review is one of those new gems! The Ritter Sport Milk Chocolate with Butter Biscuit sounded unimpressive to me, but when I tasted it, I was blown away.

The image on the wrapper shows a rippled butter/shortbread cookie being enveloped with a wave of milk chocolate. The image got me more interested in the candy than the name of this variety did. Hey, an image is worth a thousand words.

Opening the package, you get a nice chocolatey scent from the bar. There’s a hint of butter and vanilla mixed in there. The cross section is beautiful, as it’s very defined and distinct. You see the top lay of chocolate, then the wavy, rippled edge of the butter biscuit, underneath is a layer of chocolate cream and finally the bottom chocolate covering. So enticing.

The flavor is immediately sweet and chocolately, then the butter biscuit kicks in with it’s sweet, buttery crunch. Unexpectedly, I get a rush of creamy chocolate from that chocolate layer underneath the biscuit. That small well full of chocolate creme and it oozes once you bite down on it. It’s really awesome. This bar has an amazing texture mix along with incredible flavor. I can’t stop eating it.

One of the best Ritter Sport’s I’ve tried so far. It’s really delicious and will be something I’ll be picking up regularly now for chocolate cravings.

RitterSport Olympia

Ritter Sport are chocolate bars that I always see in stores and haven’t ever tried during my childhood. My parents were into European chocolate and they were fans of Lindt, but they’re creatures of habit so they seldom deviated from their first choice of sweets. It wasn’t until college when I was able to start buying for myself that I got to start tasting the Ritter Sport line. Once I did, I was very impressed.

I was contacted recently by Ritter Sport asking if I’d like samples to review for the website. Being a fan of their chocolate anyways, I accepted! I was then greeted with a box of chocolate in the mail shorty after, and the tasting begins.

I decided to start with the Olympia bar, which I was told is a bar that’s not available for sale in the US. The exotic one appealed to me first! So what’s the Olympia bar? The package describes, in German: “Jouhurt, Hoin, Nuss, Traubenzucker” which I believe is yogurt, honey, hazelnuts and glucose. Yes, glucose. Tasty, yes?

When breaking off one of the thick chocolate squared which are iconic to Ritter Sport, you immediately get a peek at the center. It’s a creamy white color white honey and nut chunks in it. You immediately smell the center, it’s sweet and milky and accented by the sweet chocolate.

The texture is smooth, accented with a crispy texture of the honey and nuts in the filling. It’s really interesting and the contrast is delightful. The flavor starts off creamy and sweet from the chocolate, then the tartness from the yogurt kicks in giving it a very dairy overtone. The honey has a really nice sweetness to it, an the flavor is really more about the honey and yogurt than the chocolate. It’s really awesome and a very unique flavor for a chocolate bar that I appreciate.

Loved this bar. It’s a unique flavor you don’t see in the USA that often, and therefore I really relished it. If you happen to be overseas and see this, you won’t regret trying one for yourself.

Wilbur Crisped Rice Bar

Back when I visited the Wilbur Candy Company and got my Wilbur Buds to review for the site, I also made sure to grab something specific when I was there: The Milk Chocolate Crisp. I owe this mainly to Cybele with her post on this bar she did a few years ago. I’ve been wanting to try it ever since, and now I finally have my chance!

The bar is broken into squared segments that are easy to break. The underbelly shows ample rice crisps in the chocolate. The bar itself is think, about 3/4 inch, so it’s hefty with a wonderful chocolate ratio to crisps here. It’s not wimpy and thin like a Nestle’s crunch bar.

The chocolate smells delightfully sweet of notes of caramel, cream and malt.

The flavor is wonderfully rich and chocolatey. The chocolate has a great cream/caramel flavor to it, and is wonderfully complimented by the starchy, malty crunch of the rice crisps. They are very fresh and crunchy, and are just delightful to eat. I didn’t expect this bar to be as amazingly good as it is. Goes to show how something so simple can be extremely delicious if it’s executed correctly.

Wow, this bar is everything I imagined and more. It’s soooooo very good. Trying this bar is a must if you’re a chocolate lover.
