Newman's Own Black Licorice Bag

I found these licorice twists in Whole Foods the other week. Usually I skip over the candy aisle in that place, since I’ve tried most of it and new products show up rarely. I was lucky to pass through and see these twists by accident. I immediately scooped them up, since I don’t get to have good licorice things often. I also really love the idea of licorice twists, but have yet to find a kind that I truly enjoy.

Newman's Own Black Licorice

The twists are very pretty. They actually look like vine charcoal. They almost have a dusty look to them. They smell faintly of licorice.

I am happy to see that molasses and licorice root are both listed on the ingredients list. I take my first bite and I immediately love what I’m tasting. These are very molasses heavy licorice twists. They have a nice thick chew, and a really silky licorice flavor. It’s only slightly herbal, with a nice sweet smoothness from the molasses. These are way better than any type of mainstream licorice twist I’ve had to date.
I really am smitten with these. If you’re a fan of licorice at all, or are looking fora good licorice candy to try for your first time, I really recommend these. Yum!

Godvia Milk Chocolate Salted Caramel

I’ve been noticing new Godiva bars on my trips to the grocery stores and pharmacies. They have an attractive rich brown color tho them and enticing macro photography on the front. On my last trip I managed to catch some of the bars on sale, so I figured new blog fodder. Plus these new bars looked so delicious! The first I’ll review is the Milk Chocolate Salted Caramel bar.

The packaging on this is really pretty, as I mentioned. The maco photography shows stacks of this bar with pieces of hard caramel crumbs. It’s very pretty and gives you a really good idea of what you’re buying and about to enjoy. The package opens easily to reveal a gold foil protecting the chocolate. I like how they keep the gold color scheme throughout the packaging.

The chocolate is a nice matte brown color, and you can see the pieces of the salted caramel flecks in it. It smells very rich and sweet and oddly enough a little salty. It feels off to describe something as smelling salty, but these does.

The milk chocolate is smooth and creamy. It’s sweet with nice flavors of cream and vanilla. The salted caramel are hard little crispy pieces in the chocolate, and they just are bursting with flavor when you encounter them. The are light and crispy, so it’s a really great textural contrast with the smooth chocolate. The flavor is just bursting with butter and cream and a saltiness that is perfect. It’s not too salty, not does it disappear around all the sweet flavors. it stands out just beautifully and compliments the chocolate so wonderfully.

This bar was really tasty. I am personally a big fan of the salt and chocolate combination. I realize it’s not for everyone, but if you’re interesting in giving it a try, I think this bar is a good place to start. It has the right balance of chocolate to caramel to salt ratio that I feel compliments all the ingredients. I really enjoyed this, and I hope to find it on sale again soon.

Ritter Sport Facebook Giveaway

If you follow the Ritter Sport page on Facebook, every month or so they hold a contest for a giveaway. I was lucky enough to win one a bit ago, and I was sent this adorable little goodie bag in the mail. How nice! It came wit ha tote bag, a lanyard, and Ritter Sport chocolate bars. It was a lot nicer than I expected, and I now have a great new bag for my work lunches and sweet for my coffee in the morning. I had reviewed all the flavors that came in this gift set, except Ritter Sport Almond, so I’ll take the opportunity to do that now.

The almond bar comes in a beautiful hunter green package. Some almonds tumble down on the package front, with the description of “with almonds frown in the California sunshine”. Almonds are California’s largest export, you know! The bar smells sweet and nutty. I get notes of cream and caramel with a hint of amaretto.

The squares break off nicely despite the large pieces of almonds in here. The chocolate is creamy and smooth and the almonds are fresh and crunchy. A really nice combination. The milk chocolate is sweet with nice notes of cream, caramel and cocoa. But don’t’ let the chocolate kid you, as the almonds are the real star here. They’re fresh and crunchy wit ha wonderful nutty flavor. It’s delicious in its simplicity.

So whether you win free chocolate from Ritter (follow them on Facebook if you want to try for that opportunity) or if you buy it in stores, you really can’t go wrong. I’m continually impressed with their chocolate and the flavors are always tasty. I highly recommend ll their chocolate bars, and am super excited for the new flavors I hear will be released later this year.

Lion Bar

This was a find from my local Cost Plus World Market. I was thankful that they carried Lion Bar. I’ve actually had it many times over the year. I just haven’t gotten around to reviewing it yet. I then decided it’s been too long, so I went and searched it out. What I like most about is it the lion roaring on th package. There’s no description or anything that this bar is exactly. Only the words “New and Improved”. Ok I’ll take your word for it Mr. Lion.

Upon further inspection I notice a neat little detail on the package. On the wrapper where it says to recycle. They have a lion putting the paper in the bin, which is very cute.

The bar is long and knobby, like a piece of wood. I bite into it and it immediately it has an interesting texture. It’s thick and chewy with bits that are very light and crispy. Looking at the cross section, it has a wafer center, like a Kit Kat, but more delicate. Surrounding that there’s bits of peanuts, rice crispies, and caramel. It’s a very fun, tasty and complex flavor. The chocolate is smooth and sweet, but not very chocolatey. The wafers are crispy and light. The caramel is thick and sweet and the peanuts add a hint of nuttiness. It’s like a child of a Snickers and a Kit Kat.

It’s a very tasty bar. Hopefully you can understand how I keep going back to it all the time. It’s just so much fun to eat. I recommend trying it if you ever encounter it.

Air Heads Xtremes Watermelon

I can’t remember what enticed me to buy this package of Airhead Xtremes Sweetly Sour Watermelon belts. It could have been the “Xtreme” on the front, as it made my brain go “Huh, that one one candy I could say it starts with the letter X”. Yes I think things like that. Or it could have been the colors and the watermelon flavors, as watermelon is one of my favorite “sour” flavors. Which confuses me, even though watermelons aren’t sour at all. Still, this package was bought and found it’s way into my home. I admit it did stay awhile in my candy stash before I got to reviewing it. I am so happy I did though!

First a few notes on the packaging. I really love how they kept to the pink/red and green of watermelons. It makes the whole candy seem very cohesive. The plastic tray does a great job of keeping the belts laying flat and nicely stacked. I was actually surprised how many there were in here. I wish I had counted them all now, but I just recall tasting them over a period of a week and being surprised that I hadn’t finished them off sooner.

The belts are pretty! The’re striped red and green with a heavy sanding of granulated sugar on them. They’re soft and pliable and easy to bite.

The flavor does start out sweet! This is a nice change of pace as usually sour comes first. The granulated sugar “sweet” coating is, well, sweet. It doesn’t taste of watermelon. Once that melts away, then you get to the “sour” watermelon part. The flavor is indeed sour, but not overly so,  and has that fun, but artificial flavoring of watermelon. Its not like a Jolly Rancher, it’s much nicer. It’s juicy and has nice fruity and floral flavors that read as “watermelon”. Super yummy!

I enjoyed these way more than I thought I would.
