I'll eat it buy won't pay for it.
Tic Tacs are a candy that I always enjoyed and was fascinated with when I was a kid. I loved how all my friend’s Moms seemed to carry them in their purses. Pulling them out while at soccer games and hearing that familiar shaking should as a Tic Tac tumbled into your hand. It was a point in time where I didn’t bother to learn the flavors, as I think I was too young to read these at some points. So I knew them as the “white ones” or the “green ones”. The “orange ones” were my favorite.
Now fast forward to the present where I do buy the occasional box of Tic Tacs, but usually it’s a new flavor that draws me in. As far as my childhood fascination goes, I surprisingly don’t buy them much. Now here is the newest flavor I found on store shelves, Tic Tac Strawberry Fields.
The Tic Tacs come in two colors, one a light pink and the other a more traditional pink-pink. Oddly enough when I checked the website, they make note of this being a “strawberry and cream” flavor even though I don’t see that anywhere on the package.
The candies smell just sweet, mostly of marshmallows. The packaging design is pretty with strawberry vines with ripe berries on them frame the tic tac logo. the green vines accented with the red strawberries is very pretty.
The flavor starts out tasting like the aroma; of vanilla marshmallow. Then a sweet, berry flavor develops. As it grows it tastes more and more like strawberry. As it hits its apex I’m strongly reminded of strawberry jam. It’s sweet, fruity, with a light floral note to it. It’s a lot of flavor for just one little Tic Tac. I’m impressed. The only thing is I don’t taste any “cream” in there that the website suggests. Just to be sure, I tried both color several times to see if the flavor was any different between the two. The only thing I notcied was the pink’s flavor appeared more quickly than the light pink one.
I liked these a lot. I know I don’t have Tic Tacs often, but I’d imagine a new flavor added to the mix is very refreshing. So adding some strawberry into your Tic Tac cycle, you won’t be disappointed. I liked having this bow in my purse for moments when I needed a quick flavor pick me up.

I love candy orange slices. When I was a kid I was allowed to grab a few from the bins when I went to the grocery store with my Mom. To this day they’re a candy that I enjoy. I’m a little sad to find that they’re getting harder to find nowadays, but I hope that’s just the candy trend right now and hopefully they’ll stat showing up more frequently. So imagine my excitement when I was contacted by Jelly Belly asking if I’d be interesting in trying some samples to review. Being a big fan of jelly belly, I said yes, but I didn’t know what they planned on sending to me. These Sunkist Orange Slices where in that package.
I admit I haven’t had the Sunkist version of orange slices, only Brach’s and some other “store brands” whose name I don’t remember at the moment. These orange slices are smaller and softer than the ones I’m used to. They still carry the same shape with the rippled top of accentuate the orange slice shape. These are most squishy to the touch, and the granulated sugar is has a nice texture to it.
The flavor is similar to the Sunkist Gem orange flavor. It’s bright and fruity, with great sweet and zesty accents to make it come across as very “juicy”. Because these are smaller and softer, they’re very “pop-able”, you find yourself eating a bunch instead of stopping at one or two. Very yummy and very addicting.
Even though these are smaller I can easily imagine them as additions to vanilla ice cream and as decorations on top of cupcakes. They’re perfectly addicting as is but I can’t help but think of creative ways they could be used in other sweets and desserts. I think the orange slice is a really overlooked classic candy, and these Sunkist Orange slices are a wonderful addition to the genre.

Sunkist Gems have been around for as long as I can remember. I have eaten them a bunch of times over the years, when I get that special craving for citrus gummi candies. One of the grocery stores that I used to frequent back East (I still love and miss you Wegmans!) had a large candy bin section, with a big barrel of individually wrapped Sunkist Gems. I’d go through and pick out the grapefruit and lemons ones for myself as a treat every so often. They’re so yummy! Jelly Belly PR recently contacted me asking if I’d like to try some samples for the blog. Being such a big fan of their products I said yes, not knowing what they’d be mailing me. Lo and behold, I had a bag of Sunkist Fruit Gems!
The gems are round discs, a little smaller than the size of a poker chip, and stand at about 1/4 inch tall. They’re colorful, but in a muted colored with fruit juice kind of way, and covered with a coating of granulated sugar.
The gems come in five flavors:
Orange: This flavor is really great. It has nice nice orangy flavor to it that’s zesty but sweet. It almost has a tangerine taste to it from the zest, but it’s smoother than that. The flavor comes across as very juicy and satisfying. Really yummy.
Lemon: This flavor is awesome. It’s tart, zesty and juicy. All that a lemon should be. The nuances in this reminds me of limoncello. Very flavorful and so delicious.
Grapefruit: I was looking forward to this one the most. This one is smooth, so smooth. The flavor is a bit more delicate than the lemon and orange, yet the flavor is that richness of grapefruit I expect and look forward to. It has a great, juicy taste that is both sweet and sour, with a hint of bitterness. Really yummy.
Raspberry: Raspberry is sweet and lightly floral. It has a nice juicy berry-ness to the flavor but it’s not very intense. Other than that it’s just sweet with no real defining notes.
Blueberry: Blueberry is sweet and has an perfumey flavor to it. I taste berries, but not specifically blueberries. Something about it is oddly “red” though, like hints of red licorice laces. It’s tasty ,and out of all the flavors in the bag I had the most of this one.
I do feel a little disappointed with the Raspberry and Blueberry flavors, not because I didn’t like how thy tasted, but more because I miss how these were a citrus fruit mix. The lime flavor got booted and these were added in. It does add more to the rainbow of colors. I shared these with my fiance and he just raved about them. Little did I know that these are a childhood favorite of his (I’ve never seen him by them himself) so he really enjoyed having these again. We both really enjoyed these and now that I know how much he loves them, I’ll be buying these more often!

This is the second gum I bought on my special gum shopping trip. It’s a nother one of the Trident Layers flavor combinations I’ve seen as late. I’ve tried the Orchard Peach + Ripe Mango and was a big fan of it. When I saw this cherry+lime flavor I was excited to give it a go.
Opening up the package, I was surprised to find that somehow that cherry/lime flavor reminded me of cola. It has hints of diet coke and Dr. Pepper in it. I can’t quite put my finger on why, but my best guess is the cherry aroma that is just a tad spicy. Still, the gum smells really nice and enticing.
The stick of gum is very stunning. It’s a bright crimson with a lime green flavor stripe down the middle. It’s a little Christmas-y yes, but it’s very beautiful. I do wonder if it’ll turn my tongue colors.
The flavor starts off on a strangly. The lime is the first thing I taste, and it’s very tart, bitter and reminds me of floor cleaner. Not my favorite thing, mind you. The cherry then kicks in and delivers a ripe, juicy “red” flavor that takes away that strange cleaner flavor. So now it’s become this bright “red” flavor with a tartness to it from the lime. Once the flavors blend some the gum is actually pretty tasty. It had me worried from a slightly rough start.
I think I would still go for the Orchard Peach+Ripe Mango flavor over this one. Cherry flavors sometimes are too metallic for me, and even though I enjoyed it, I just enjoyed the other one more. That’s not to say this is a bad flavor at all. I shared this gum with my co workers and they all really loved it. Again, everyone has their own opinion!

This candy bar caught my eye immediately. I found it while on a trip to New Your City. I was in town for a wedding, and earlier in the day I was exploring around Soho. I went into Dean & Deluca’s to poke around for some candy, since they tend to carry more obscure and high end types. That is where I saw on their chocolate shelf, this Sir Francis Bacon Toffee Bar.
This bar really stands out. It’s not shaped like most chocolate bars, but thicker and heftier. It’s like a mini brick. I really like the style of the packaging. It has the engraving of Sir Francis Bacon on the front, wit ha pig snout pasted on his face like a sticker. If you look closely you can see they drew in the strings that holds the snout to his face. Very clever.
The back of the package reads: “We start with rich, buttery toffee, add the surprise of artisan smoked bacon, then enrobe it in premium dark chocolate. The result? A bar as original as it is unforgettable.” Excited after reading this, I open the box and pull out a large block wrapped in maroon foil. I unwrap the foil packet and you can see the big block of chocolate toffee there. It’s very pretty, the chocolate is dark and smooth with a nice subtle sheen. It smells dark, rich and slightly smokey.
I try to take a bite of the bar, but I find that it’s just too thick for me to break a corner off with my front teeth. I angle the bar so I can chew it from the side and lightly clamp down in hopes of lightly breaking off a piece. I broke a corner off successfully and saw that under the chocolate this is a giant slab of toffee. The toffee is very flavorful, full with notes of butter and something toasty. The chocolate is good, and adds some sweetness, but it’s really the toffee that shines here. As for the bacon? Every so often you can take its smokiness, and some bacon flavor. It isn’t with every bite, and the toffee flavor really overpowers everything else.
This bar isn’t as bacon flavored as I imagined. Which, is probably a good thing because you want a good balance of flavors, even more adventurous ones. It is really excellent as just a toffee with chocolate bar, so if you wanted to try something with a “light” bacon experience, this bar is a good start. Both me and my fiance greatly enjoyed it.
