Well, DOTS went and did it again! To follow up with their limited edition Halloween DOTS and their Christmas DOTS, they now have a box of flavors for Valentine’s Day. I’m really pleased to see this holiday edition, as I’m a big fan of DOTS, so it’s fun to give the new ones a try. I really love the packaging design here, as with all of them, as it really captures the feeling of the season.
My delight was dimmed a little when I saw that the cherry vanilla made a return in this box. After tasting it in the Christmas box, it’s a flavor that I can go without. The pairing flavor is Passion fruit Vanilla, which is something I haven’t had in a candy before, so that certainly made up for any anticipation lost on the cherry flavor’s return.
Cherry Vanilla: Just like the cherry DOT from the Christmas variety. Red with a white bottom. The flavor is the same as before: a bright, fruity, punchy cherry with a medicinal edge, matched with a creamy vanilla flavor. Second time around I liked it a bit better, but I still yearn for a strawberry or raspberry instead.
Passion Fruit Vanilla: Pink with a white bottom, the flavor is more raspberry and floral, with notes of perfume. Tasty! I don’t notice the vanilla as much here, which is fine with me since the flavor on it’s own is so nice.
I thought this mix of flavors was much more successful in terms of flavor, than the Christmas variety. I can see these as some adorable toppers for some Valentine’s Day cupcakes, or just arranged in a pretty bowl for your sweetheart.

With Valentine’s Day only a few weeks away, I often get asked for chocolate and candy recommendations for gifts by friends and family. Being a candy enthusiast and all will lead to that, and over time I’ve acquired a few good ideas I’d like to share with you. So just in time for shopping, here’s a list of five sweet things to give to your sweetheart.
Please note that I have not received anything in payment from the companies mentioned here, I just think they’re great ideas.
1. Edible Chocolate Box from Charles Chocolates. Nothing says “I love You” like the traditional box of chocolates. Charles Chocolates takes it a step further by making the box edible as well. There’s many flavors and designs to choose from, so it’s easy to choose which the recipient will enjoy most.
2. Good Quality Foreign Chocolate from Chocoshpere.com. Chocosphere carries all that great imported yet hard to find bars of chocolate. It’s easy to buy a few to make a gift set on your own. I highly recommend Amedai, Amano, El Rey, Michel Cluizel, Valrhona and Dolfin as personal favorites of mine.
3. Chocolate Silk Spa Gift Set from The Merry Chocoholic. ($34.50) A chocolate scented gift set that comes with body scrub, body butter and hand/body lotion. A good option for those who might not want to eat chocolate (gasp!) but still wants to indulge.
4. A Chocolatetelegram. For those out you in Europe, it’s a love letter and chocolate combined! Your sweetie will get a box with chocolates spelling out a message inside. A really cute idea.
5. Licorice Allsorts Earrings from ErikaPrice at Etsy.com. These cute earrings are a perfect option for the non chocolate eating lover in your life. The colorful licorice are nicely sculpted and a lot of fun.

The candy aisles for Valentine’s Day are always fun to explore. On one hand you get the traditional favorites: boxes of chocolates, NECCO’s Sweethearts candies, Russel Stover’s Cream Hearts, Cinnamon Hearts, and Gumm Lips just to name a few. Then there’s the seasonal limited editions that appear, some old favorites from last year and others the new kid on the block. These SweetTart Heart Gummies are one of those new kids, although I can’t say exactly if they’re rehash from last Valentine’s Day swag because I do not remember them. Sometimes candy just gets overlooked.
The hearts come in a bag whose design still reads “Wonka” to me still instead of “Valentine’s Day”. I blame it on the purple and blue being the dominant colors. There’s a little see through window so you can see the colorful hearts inside the bag.
Smell tart and artificially fruity like Jolly Ranchers The hearts are a little larger than a quarter, and have a dusting of sugar on them. The come in three colors: pink, purple, and a mix of both.
The bite is very soft and chewy, but thankfully not sticky. The flavor is tart and I’m reminded of the sour bunnies I had a few years ago at Easter. The pink is a cherry flavor with lots of artificial tartness, and the purple is grape. Both remind me of cough syrup. They leave a sourness in the mouth long after you’ve eaten them.
If you’re a SweetTarts lover, I think you’d really enjoy these. The flavor of the candy is on par with the originals, and the texture and the size of these gummies are really fun. A sweet way to enjoy a candy you’d love. But for me, they’re really not my thing.

Well, these are one of my few, truly holiday releases of any candy that I found to be new this year. I spied these Christmas DOTS on the shelf at my local CVS, and quickly snatched them up. I think it’s very gutsy of them to be labeled “Christmas” since everyone seems to say “holiday” nowadays. I appreciate it, since the DOTS are using the red/green/white color scheme of Christmas.
The package clearly says that the Christmas DOTS are cherry, lime and vanilla flavored. I like the way they look, as they’re cute and really festive. I’m such a sucker for that!
These look like all the other DOTS, the shapes and texture are the same. The difference here is, that, like the yogurt DOTS, these have a flavored cap on them. Here’s it’s vanilla flavored.
Since they’re only two flavors, there’s not too much to say. The lime has a nice zest to it, it kinda creeps into floor cleaner territory for me, but it doesn’t stay that way for too long. It delivers that reliable “green” taste that most kinda hate. The cherry is very bright and fruity, and I don’t get too much bitterness in there. It’s more berry than anything, and it works well as a red flavor. The vanilla top on both lend an extra creaminess and the vanilla flavor is detectable and very nice.
I think these are tricky for most people, since cherry and lime are flavors that people can be fickle about very easily. If for no other reason, I’d say buy these as they’d look great on a gingerbread house.

Oooo! Something new and festive for the holidays! I love it! I certainly didn’t see this one coming, and it wasn’t until I noticed them on the shelf at my usual grocery store that I had heard of their existence. I was excited to see them as much as I love the Candy Cane Kisses that Hershey’s makes for this time of year, the lack of real cocoa butter in them has me shunning them. These Dove Peppermint Bark pieces can hopefully fill the void. So I grabbed a bag and hoped for the best.
The wrappers are silver with dots of red and green on them, and therefore very festive. Inside each wrapper is a holiday tip from Martha, reminding me that I can string lights on trees in my year and use pears and chocolate for an easy dessert. You know, the type of things you’d “forget” considering you’ve celebrated the holiday season in some form your whole life. I only read the if I felt I needed a chuckle.
The candy is nicely constructed. It’s white chocolate on top, and the bottom is dark chocolate. It’s split maybe 2/3, but really is almost even. The white chocolate top has shards of peppermint candy cane in it. They’re sticky yet don’t get stuck to your teeth or cut your mouth.
The flavor is awesome. I was worried it’s taste more of dark chocolate than white chocolate, but it doesn’t. The peppermint is the main flavor, it’s light and refreshing, yet not overpowering. It’s delicious and really satisfying to eat with a hot drink.

These King Leo Hand Dipped Peppermint Sticks were a free sample given to me by the nice folks over at QualityCandy. At first I was hesitant, because peppermint candy isn’t really my thing. I do know a bit about it though, as one of my good friend was really into peppermint candy so I always was on the lookout for her. I’ve bought King Leo for her before, and she always gushed that they were favorites of hers. Now I can give them a go myself.
I do love the design of the packaging. It’s very classic, and I love the image of the regal lion sitting atop the logo. The stand up carton protects the sticks well, as none of them were broken when I opened the box.
First off, let’s talk about the main part of this candy, the peppermint stick. I’ve always loved King Leo’s peppermint sticks, as they were more old fashioned feeling and they didn’t resemble the Brach’s Starlight Peppermint candies that I associated with cheap candy dishes as a kid. These peppermint sticks are shorter and thicker, with an intense flavor and a wonderful texture. They break easily in the mouth, and are soft and almost powdery as you chew them.
Now, take those peppermint sticks and cover them with real Belgium chocolate, and boy, do you get one really tasty treat here. It’s a classic example of how peppermint and chocolate go over so well together. And thankfully for me, I didn’t get any reminders that “Oh, this tastes like toothpaste” which is a typical reaction I have to minty candies. Just pure enjoyment here.
These would be an excellent holiday treat or gift to anyone who loves peppermint candy. I was really expecting now to enjoy them, but I was proven wrong. Now I an eat one of these instead of a candy cane and not feel like I’m not in the spirit of the season!

When I first heard of Hedonist Artisan Chocolates, it was through Rosa over at ZOMG! Candy. She reviewed a sampling of their truffles, and I recognized the name of where Hedonist is located, as my Aunt lived in Rochester, NY. A few weeks ago I was contacted by Hedonist asking if I’d like some free samples of their work to review on the blog. I recalled Rosa’s glowing review and gladly accepted their offer.
I was sent a box of their Holiday Truffle collection and two packages of bark. Everything arrived safely in colorful tissue paper, with the chocolate works of art as pristine as if I had just carried them out of their store.
Let’s get to the tasting, shall we?
Holiday Truffle Collection
Champagne Pomegranate: Dark with a dusting of sugar crystals on top. The shell is of medium thickness, it took me a moment to sink my teeth into it. Flavor is chocolatey and smooth, with a nice tart fruitiness to it. Pomegranate is a bit of a ethereal flavor to capture, as is champagne, but the overall fruitiness of both elements show and balance with the dark chocolate.
Egg Nog: Topped with a sprinkling of nutmeg. The center of this one is a speckled white chocolate. The texture is very buttery and smooth, and you taste the creaminess of the white chocolate, mixed with gentle notes of the spices. It’s a very authentic eggnog, minus the intense burn of rum. It’s extremely tasty and I really enjoyed it.
Fig: Accented with a dried slice of fig, this one seemed much darker and denser than the others. The texture is very moist, smooth and creamy, You do taste the fig, with this sweet rich flavors and it really complements the chocolate. There’s even bits of the seeds in there which adds to the wonderful texture contrast. While you might seeds in a ganache would detract from the ganache’s smooth center, this actually works well and make it feel more fresh and authentic.
Ginger Molasses: I found the description of this one every enticing. Topped with a slice of candied ginger, the shell is a nice thickness again and the interior ganache is milker colored than the others. The flavor is beautiful, you get the spice of the ginger, which isn’t too strong. the molasses is very prominent, giving this wonderful earthy rich flavor to the chocolate. It’s like a ginger snap in a chocolate truffle. It’s delicious and I really loved it.
Orange Clove: Decorated with a slice of candied orange peel. The orange flavor is present immediately, and it’s a delicate flavor that’s still second place to the chocolate. the clove takes a moment to show, but when it does appear, it’s very pronounced and earthy. it really reminds me of Wassil, very fruity and full of spice. It tastes of the holidays.
Milk Chocolate Sesame Bark: Creamy looking milk chocolate studded with white and black sesame seeds. It smells very nutty and sweet. The milk chocolate is smooth and buttery, with nice notes of caramel, cream and cocoa. The sesame adds a slightly crunchy texture and a wonderful toasted nutty flavor. The seeds are also salty, and that really enhances the flavors of the milk chocolate. It’s lovely.
Pistachio Ginger Bark: Beautiful dark colored semi-sweet chocolate with whole pistachios and chunks of crystallized gingers with a touch of salt. Yum! The chocolate is about 1/4 inch thick, so it’s a perfect size for biting into; it’s not too thick and not too thin. The melt of the chocolate is smooth and buttery and rich with flavors that aren’t too acidic, but carry nice notes of coffee and cocoa. The pistachios are wonderfully fresh and salty and really add depth and substance to the chocolate base. The ginger gives it a nice chew, with it’s thick and slightly sticky texture. It adds a nice warmth to the chocolate and all three ingredients go together beautifully.
The well designed and beautifully executed flavors of these chocolates really wow-ed me. Usually most artisan chocolates make something “ho-hum”, something ordinary but extremely tasty, something overly unique to shock you, and I find myself unimpressed afterward. These fall into all the right niches of creating a tasty and indulgent experience. Despite all the additions to the bark and the flavors of the chocolate, Hedonist still lets the chocolate shine over all the other ingredients. Which, is what a good chocolatier does in my opinion.

Clark bar, made by NECCO, is a classic/retro candy bar that has a pretty wide distribution that I feel is very overlooked. I see it in many places and it makes me happy to see such a bar still on the shelves. Many of you I am sure are not even aware of what a Clark bar is, am I right? Well, don’t feel bad, I’ll rectify that by the end of this review. It’s a pretty easy bar to spot, with it’s bright, attractive red wrapper. I stumbled across this Halloween “Wicked Mix” meant for trick or treaters in my local Wegmans and promptly snatched it up.
Clark Bar: classic red wrapper: Clark bar is like a Butterfinger, except it uses real chocolate. Butterfinger uses that nasty mockolate stuff. The bar smells chocolatey and peanut buttery. The center is very crispy and you feel it flake apart, but it’s not messy at all. The center is a nice peanut butter brown color, and crumbles nicely and cleanly. The flavor is mainly the peanut butter, but the chocolate adds a nice sweetness to it.
Clark Bar Dark: dark brown wrapper: Smells darker and more of chocolate and a hit of coconut. The center here is much harder, it didn’t crisp like the classic one did. It was more difficult to eat because of it. The chocolate is more bittersweet and adds a nice richness to the peanut butter that I liked a lot.
Clark Bar Coconut: (brown wrapper): I was very surprised to find this one is not chocolate covered at all! Instead it’s covered in flakes of toasted coconut, like a Zagnut bar. Smells coconutty and sweet. The flavor, oh, it is awesome! It’s rich in the sweet, toasty flavors of the coconut, then the nutty, salty flavors of the peanut butter. The center here is crisp like the classic, so it’s easy to eat. Love it.
This is a delightful (er, should I go Boston on everyone and call it “wicked”, ha ha) mix. It’s nice to see such a classic bar in the Halloween aisle and I’m sure any trick or treaters would love to get something unique like this in their swag. Who knows, you might even influence a new generation of Clark bar lovers.

All Halloween Ghost DOTS, you return again like a bad haunting. Oh! And look! This time you brought friends with you! I heard tales of new flavors of DOTS being released this Halloween, but didn’t see any for myself until the other day in a Superfresh in the area. Then I was lucky enough to spot them in full sized boxes in Rite Aid. Whoot! This is what adult trick or treating is, and I like it. I grabbed a bag of the mini sized version, and this year Ghost DOTS have Bat DOTS and Candy Corn DOTS to keep them company.
Ghost: “Assorted Fruit Flavors” Which flavor? Which ghost? It’s a MYSTERY!” reads the box. I’ve encountered these a few years ago for the first time, and am sort of both pleased and a little annoyed they brought them back. The DOTS are an odd seam foam green color, they look transparent but aren’t. It’s strange. They smell lightly fruity. The first one I had tasted like fruit punch. Second, more like orange. Third, like lime. I’m guessing these are just the normal DOTS flavors, just colored all the same to trick you. While tasty, they just disappointed me since the drawing of the ghostie on the front is so darned cute. I wish the DOTS had faces on them still.
Candy Corn: These feel a tad softer than the others. This DOT is an opaque orange with a yellow bottom, like a candy corn but missing the white tip. They smell odd: a mix of plastic and Eggo waffles. The flavor is sweet and bland at first, then the fake butter flavor of candy corn appears. It’s, kinda strange. It doesn’t taste bad, more like a watered-down candy corn, but with a thicker and stickier texture. Some I tried had a funny cola flavor to it, but it was pretty random and hard to pin down as something that happened with all of them. Oddly enough, I liked them. But then again I’m a fan of candy corn, so many of you probably think I’m crazy to begin with.
Bat DOTS: blood orange flavored: The box is so appealing. There’s a cute bat with a orange wedge mouth leaking juices on it! DAWWWWW! The DOTS are dark black with a dull, opaque appearance. The flavor is awesome. It’s fruity, a little sweet and a little tart, it tastes not quite like orange at points, but has a more berry flavor to it. It reminds me of how fruits snacks tasted when I was a kid. It’s delicious, and I really like it.
I was pleased with this mix, and despite my annoyance with the Ghost DOTS, they’re still tasty and it’s a well rounded mix. A good option if you want to hand out a little something different this Halloween.

This Japanese Kit Kat is special, as it’s not only a new flavor (lemon) but also a novelty because the packaging is different. It’s a “Share with a Friend” box, that opens like a love letter, and it’s decorated with hears just in time for Valentines Day (yes, I know, way late on the pickup). It’s pretty to look at and I appreciate how unique it looks. It’s certainly catch my eye at the convenience store, that’s for sure.
The box opens so it’s like a letter and the two packets of the Kit Kat pop out perfectly inviting to give to a friend or lover. I can’t read the text, as my Japanese isn’t fluent enough, but I’m sure it’s something sappy. The color of the fingers is a nice creamy pastel yellow. It’s very spring-like aura to it. The bar smells less like lemon but more strong and sweet like a pudding or custard. Now that I think about it, it’s exactly like lemon pudding pie. It’s just a heavenly smell.
The flavor is out of this world! It tastes just like lemon curd. It’s tart, so terribly authentically tart. There’s a little hint of something in there that tastes of creamy cheesecake, and overall it’s terribly creamy, smooth and a little sweet. So awesome. Yum.
What could I say? After my first bite or two to taste I couldn’t gobble this Kit Kat down fast enough. I don’t understand why I’d want to share this one. It’s too good I need to keep it for myself. (I’m guess I’m bad to think like that, but in all honesty, I did share this with the boy.)

I’ve shared my thoughts on Reese’s pieces before: hated as a child and I’ve come to appreciate them with special and infrequent cravings. I really just miss the chocolate with the peanut butter. I saw these on one of the candy hunts and wanted to give them a try, mainly because I hear so many good things about these in their Pastel Eggs format. Part of the allure was that if I didn’t end up liking them, I could at least get some pretty photos of them and then give the rest to my boyfriend, who is crazy about Reese’s Pieces.
All I can say right now, these changed my mind about Reese’s Pieces. This new shape and size changes everything. The pieces are eggs shaped: fatter like marbles with one end a little pointier than the other. They come in festive pastel colors: green, yellow, blue and pink. The quality control here is excellent as there’s little variation in shape and texture of the shells.
Taking my first bite, I realize immediately what makes them special. There’s just more of everything. The shell is bigger and thicker, giving a more satisfying crunch and there’s more peanut butter. Enough to pleasantly coat your tongue if you’re patient enough to let it melt in in your mouth. This means there’s much more flavor, obviously. Some things are the same though: the shells feels nice and smooth on the tongue and the peanut butter is creamy, sweet with that perfect kick of salt.
A glowing example of how a small change in format can change a so-so candy into something stellar. If only I could get Reese’s Pieces like this year ‘round! I’m definitely going to look for more of these as the Easter sales continue.

Happy Belated Easter to all you candy lovers!
I hope you had something sweet and delicious in your Easter basket. Or at the very least, ate some candy. Here’s a treat from me here at The Candy Enthusiast: some LOLz Peeps from...strange Peeps I found in the packages I bought this year. I hope they give you a chuckle.

The Lifesavers jelly beans are one of the flavors I looked forward to trying the most. Unlike Jolly Ranchers and SweeTarts, I’m actually a big fan of Lifesavers, ever since I’m a little kid. I ate every flavor in the roll when I was treated to one, even the green one that most people would try and trade away for another flavor. This was back in the day when the Five Flavor roll consisted of cherry, lemon, orange, pineapple and lime. Ah, those were the days.
There’s a large flavor variety of flavors in this one bag, eight to be exact. I like the fact that there’s lots to choose from, but at the same time, I feel a little overwhelmed. I think it’s funny how there’s flavors included in this mix that you can’t find in the normal Lifesavers hard candies, like the Peach. I could be mistaken though, as it’s been a bit since I last examined the rolls in the checkout lane in the supermarket.
The beans are a nice shape and are very bright and colorful. They are very glossy, and therefore I find them very attractive.
Strawberry (pink): very tart, fruity and jammy. It’s very syrupy sweet and really reads as a “pink” flavor.
Apple (green): Right away this flavor is very sour and zesty with strong apple flavors. It tastes like a tart apple cider with a slight artificial edge to it.
Peach (light orange): This flavor is very perfumey and juicy. It has an intense, and surprisingly authentic flavor.
Grape: The flavor is mild, but comes across as very rich, deep and jammy flavors. My thoughts immediately run to concord grape jelly.
Pineapple: This is like the real Lifesaver with a very authentic pineapple flavor combined with a good tartness.
Cherry: So loyal to the cherry Lifesaver, it’s incredible. Tart, fruity with a very acute fake metallic flavor.
Orange: Also very faithful to the Lifesaver candy, this is so bright and juicy. I love it! The flavor is so zesty I want to call it Tangerine as opposed to orange.
Lemon: So zesty, sweet and flavorful of juicy fresh lemons. Wowoza. This is what all lemon candy should taste like.
I really, really enjoyed these. I liked the ability to get some of my favorite Lifesavers flavors in a new texture. It’s exciting and makes me fall in love with Lifesavers and jelly beans all over again.

I was a very late bloomer in terms of my appreciation of the Cadbury Creme Eggs (or CCE’s in shorthand). My first memories of them was the ads I recall as a child of the 1980’s, featuring a white bunny that clucks like a hen, surrounded by impostor bunnies that made noises of different animals. I recall my Mom wrinkling her nose at these adds, stating that she “hated” those things, as they were too sweet. I paid little attention to her comments, like most children do with their parents. It wasn’t until college where I actually got my first taste of a CCE, and from then on, I was forever changed.
There’s many types of CCE’s on the market. There’s the original, caramel, fudge (or was it truffle?), mini, mini caramel, and most recently orange (which I reviewed for CandyAddict last year). I’ve tried them all and liked them, but I keep returning to the original as my favorite. If I had to give one second place, I’d go for the orange.
The concept of the CCE is simple. It’s a hollow milk chocolate egg with a creamy fondant center that’s white with a yellow spot in it, so it looks like an egg yolk. The egg is a good size (though it’s been shrinking over the years) and the packaging changes every year it seems. The photo above is the new update of the design for 2008.
Unwrapped, the egg is beautiful and feels heavy in your hand. You can see the seam whee the two halves come together to seal the fondant interior. The chocolate sides have a design of a eight pointed star on each side and lines that circle them.
The egg smells lightly of cocoa and cream.
The chocolate is thick and has that wonderful European flavor to it. Sweet, milky, a little tart, and a good chocolate flavor. Now I can see why my mom complained that this style of chocolate is too sweet, but I like it just fine. The center’s overall texture should be thick and flowing, like egg white can be. But the one I got here to sample was more dried out and grainy, which I found odd. The flavor is extremely sweet with hints of vanilla. The texture in the mouth is smooth with a little grain to it, and it feels cool on the tongue. It can be a little sticky, and it feel like eating frosting fresh from the bowl.
I bought a few more in search of that creamy, flowing center. I think I got it here.
What can I say, I love these things. I tend to get a small stash to last myself a little while each Easter. They’re the kind of candy I can only have so often, as if I eat too many close together I feel I need to pass out in a sugar coma. Yes, they’re that sweet and that addicting. Isn’t that a sign of a good candy? It is in my book.

I know, I know. Why am I reviewing more SweeTart candies if I’m not a fan of them? Let’s just say sometimes curiosity gets the best of me and I like to take one of the team. I noticed these by chance in one of the smaller Easter candy bins on the very bottom shelf. I was immediately drawn in by how extremely colorful they were, so into the bag they went.
I was instantly delight by them once I opened the package, for many reasons. They have a nice bouncy chew, and the sugar coating gives it a little texture that feels sandy, but not grainy. The actual form of these candies are really cute, they’re obviously bunnies and the mold for these is very pleasing. The form is recognizable without being too detailed, and the proportions are nice too. I don’t feel the bunnies are overly deformed (like gummi bears with the giant heads). The ears are the best feature. So cute! Probably one of the most adorable Easter candies I’ve encountered yet.
Pink: I can’t lay my finger on this flavor. It’s a little strawberry, a little cherry and a little watermelon. It was a little sweet, a little tart...and lot of “little"s huh? It has a nice red fruity flavor with a good sweet tarty zest to it.
Orange: Very tart orange flavor. It’s strong in the beginning, but then mellows into a light sweet flavor.
Yellow: Lemon, but very floral and soapy tasting.
Green: It tastes subtly of apple, like a nice tart cider. Mainly it’s just sweet with a tarty edge.
Blue: I expected this to taste of blue raspberry, but what a surprise to find that it tasted like a fruity Hawaiian punch! Must be the same blue punch flavor as the jelly bean from yesterday’s review. It’s got a good sour note, with flavors of apple, grape, banana and orange all mixing around. It’s lovely.
Purple: Has a very floral, grape soda like essence. The tartness and the strength of the grape flavor grows as you eat it, which I found interesting. Usually it’s the other way around. I think the tart and grape work really well together.
I liked these a lot better than the jelly bean version. The texture and cute shape certainly play a big part in that though, as opposed to the flavors winning me over. I didn’t finish the bag and ended up sharing them with friends instead.
