Chelsea: Citrus Sweets Mix

Chelsea tends to come out with flavor mixes for the appropriate season. This “Citrus Sweets” mix came out in summer 2007 (from what I believe) and featured the flavors of “Honey Lemon Gelee”, “Orange Cream”, and “Pink Grapefruit Yogurt”. Yum!

Haribo Tropifrutti Bag

Haribo is a brand of gummies that I’m always excited to try. What’s difficult is that since they’re a European company/brand/candy, we don’t get the full selection here in the US. I sometimes tease myself by looking at their German website and the vast selection of candies they offer. I want to try them all! But sadly, unless I take a trip to Germany, I will have to wait and just hope I will come across there domestically someday. I found these Haribo Tropifrutti in Cost Plus World Market, one of the few places I can find imported Haribo products. I was excited about this find since this is a variety I haven’t seen before, so something new finally! Hooray!

Haribo Tropifrutti

Texture is interesting. It’s kinda like a fruit pare inside a jelly bean, with a hard outside and a smooth jelly interior.

Red: Fruity and jammy. It reminds me of a raspberry Popsicle.

Dark Red: This one tastes more herbal and fruity, but not in any distinct way. Just “red”.

Green: Lightly watermelon flavored and that fake, juicy watermelon flavor.

White: Pineapple, bright, juicy and zesty. This flavor is spot on.

Yellow: Oddly enough, this is the most realistic banana flavor in a candy that I’ve ever tasted. It’s captured the starchy smooth feel of a banana perfectly. It’s sweet and have that sweet flavor we recognize as banana. Well done.

Orange: Yay, this one held no real surprise. It’s a mild, sweet, juicy orange flavor. Not too overdone, but not too mild.

Overall, I liked these flavors. They’re different from the typical tropical flavors you get here in the USA and I appreciate having something different. I was really impressed with the banana flavor, so that alone makes this package a winner for me. I also shared these with my boyfriend and friends, and they all liked them and were impressed with the texture. If you’re looking for something different, these are a great gummi treat to have if you’re trying to feel that thrill of flavor discovery.

Sour Punch Bits Strawberry Watermelon Box

I’ve heard about these Sour Punch Bits, a new type of sour candy that’s a spinoff of Sour Punch Straws. I found a box of them in a candy store called Rocket Fizz in old town Pasadena. Unlike Sour Punch Straws that come in a clear cellophane package, these new Bits come in a movie theater sized box. I’m not the biggest fan of Sour Punch Straws, but seeing these new variety I couldn’t help but want to give them a shot.

The box these Bits come in is very attractive. The box’s design isn’t too busy, it has a bright yellow background with their signature logo and Punch faces puckering. It also has colorful illustrations of strawberries and watermelon on it, so it’s vibrant and delicious looking.

Opening the box, you find a small plastic bag that takes up about half of the box inside. It’s tightly sealed and keeps the candies fresh and safe. Opening the package, I get a whiff of the candies: they smell like cardboard. Ooooh yeah.

Sour Punch Bits Strawberry Watermelon

The candies are thick little tubes, striped with color and sanded with sour sugar. They clump easily and feel slightly squishy to the touch.

The flavor is tart and fruity, but I wouldn’t call them sour. The sour sugar coating has a sour edge to it, and you really don’t taste it until the end of the candy’s flavor. Speaking of the candies flavor, it’s very…plastic, more so than the original Sour Punch straws. It starts out sweet, then the berry flavor kicks it. It’s…also just sweet. The watermelon shows up giving it a lighter fake “watermelon” taste we know so well. The flavor ends with “red” flavor akin to Twizzlers, then dissipates.

I would eat the normal Sour Punch Straws over these any day. I shared the rest of my package with friends, and they all really liked them, so what do I know. Since buying these I also seen a lemon and tangerine flavor, which, I am interested in trying despite not liking this flavor. It just goes to show that certain candies will speak to some and not others.

MilkyWay Strawberry

I had found this Milky Way Strawberry Surprise a few years ago (in 2008) in New York City. I do not recall what it tasted like nor exactly what was going on inside it. My best guess is that it had strawberry nougat, since the UK Milk Way is like the USA’s “3 Musketeers”.

See's Double Caramel Box

I just happened to find myself in the mall the other day, and whenever I’m there I make sure to pop by the See’s Candies store to see if they have anything new and delicious. I was in luck, as I saw this limited edition of “Double Caramel” truffles right on the shelf. New See’s candy, yay!

So what is “Double Caramel” exactly? According to the box it’s a brown sugar caramel layered with a chocolate butter caramel. This is all surrounded by a coating of their milk chocolate to boot, so you can bet I was salivating while I was reading this description in the store.

Once I had these prettied home and photographed, I was finally ready to open the box. They are sizable bonbons, and I mean sizable. There’s six of them to the box, which is 5 ounces. To give you an idea, they’re size of golf balls. Awesome, right?

See's Double Caramel

The smell sweet and chocolatey.

They are very dense to bite into. The chocolate is thick, but soft, and the caramel is extremely smooth and dense. The caramel is extremely soft and you get all the buttery, creamy, sweetness that you expect from a good caramel. Mixed with the luscious milk chocolate exterior, it’s heaven. You can’t really taste the difference between the two different caramels. You get the flavors all mixed so you taste the best flavors of each part.

What can I say? These are simply wonderful. Since they’re so big, you only really need one at a time. They go fantastically with a cup of coffee. I saw these in both stores and online, so you should try some if they’re still available!
