Tootsie Pop Drops Peppermint Box

Tootsie Pop Drops are a candy I really enjoy and definitely don’t buy enough. I spotted these Candy Cane Tootsie Pop Drops in Target and eagerly snatched them up. Holiday candies are so much fun! I was excited to see these since Tootsie came out with the peppermint Tootsie Pops a few yard ago, and those were really awesome. I haven’t seen them recently, nor have I really looked for them either, but I have hoped they’d bring them back since they were a wonderful flavor combination. So seeing these Candy Cane Tootsie Pop Drops made my little candy heart happy. It’s good to see something you feel is classic on the candy shelves.

The box is pretty with a nice red/green color motif with images of candy canes and the actual Tootsie. The background to the box is pink, which I find to be an odd color choice, but I will admit that it really works well with the holiday motif of this package. They have a beautiful illustration of the candies in the bottom corner that I find appealing, and after seeing the candy firsthand, I feel they’re an accurate depiction of them. The box has a foil package on the inside that keeps the candies safe. I was happy to see them taking this extra step in making sure these drops are well protected from moisture and brute force.

The candy candy drops are adorable. They’re about the size of a nickel and are around 1/2 inch tall. They’re white with beautiful red stripes on them, and no two look a like. Th candies are well protected too, most were pristine and there wasn’t too much “dust” in the foil packet from candy damage.

Tootsie Pop Drops Peppermint

The flavor is exactly like a candy cane. Fresh and full of that intense peppermint flavor. The shape s very pleasing in your mouth.  After sucking on them for a bit, or if you’re me you swish it around in your mouth because candies like this are fun) you get it to soften and eventually break so you can get the tootsie interior. The Tootise inside is soft, chewy and chocolatey.  It blends well with the peppermint flavoring adding a nice sweetness, yet the peppermint is still very powerful and is still the dominant flavor.

I really enjoyed these. I’d certainly go for a box of these over traditional mints or a candy cane. They’re small enough to feel like a quick little sweet, but big enough to feel like a treat if you’re just looking for a mint.

Tootsie Bunch Pops

I am a big fan of Tootsie Pops. I’ve always enjoyed them ever since I was a kid. There has been many flavor variations of Tootsie Pops in the past few years, with the Tropical Tootsie Pops, Wild Berry, Peppermint, and banana. There might be more but those are the ones that come to mind immediately. So I was obviously excited to see this Holiday Tootsie Bunch Pops in Target when I was doing my candy hunting. It’s a bunch of Tootise Pops in a bouquet of sorts, fitted with red and green pops. So very cute!

The two flavors in this bouquet, a red which is cherry and a green which is sour apple. I like how there’s one classic and one new flavor in this set. It makes it familiar and adventurous at the same time.

As you can see in the photo, the wrapper are beautiful. They even have little snowflakes on them!

Tootsie Holiday Lollipops

Cherry is the same, familiar flavor we know and love from the traditional Tootsie Pops. It’s bright an very “red” tasting, with notes of cherry that are sweetened with accents of strawberry and raspberry. The flavor is more sweet than metallic thankfully, which always worried me with candies that have red food coloring in them. There’s a slight zest toward the end of the flavor that really enlivens the lollipop. The tootsie center with it’s cocoa flavor blends well with the cherry candy outside, and it’s a classic combination.

Sour Apple is gorgeous to look at. I’ve never seen a dark green Tootsie Pop before. The flavor is immediately sour and zesty, and the flavor reminds me of something I’ve had before yet I can’t put my finger on it. The taste starts off sweet, like watermelon, with juicy notes and a sour end to it. Then there’s a bright flavor of perfume at the end of it. The perfumey taste is kinda off putting, since tasting flowers isn’t my favorite thing. Still, it’s a decent flavor and I’m sure big fans of sour flavor will enjoy it.

This is a really cute festive candy for the season. I bought it for $1, so it’s certainly very affordable. I can’t help but imagine what a wreath or center piece made out of these candies would look like. I guess I think up weird things like that. Tootise Pops are always fun, and these are no exception.

Sour DOTS box

“The Dot that bites back!” says this package of Sour DOTS. Seems like they decided to have an addition to the DOTS family. I was excited to try these once I found them, as most of the variations on the traditional DOTS I’ve had I’ve liked a lot. Even though I am not crazy on sour candy, maybe a sour variation on a candy I already liked would be the trick.

First of all, I love the package for these. The DOTS that are making sour, puckering faces are just too cute! I’m always a sucker when you add faces to candy. These colors are also fun and inviting and do send off that “sour” vibe.

Opening the box, I find that a coating of citric acid and sugar are what makes these DOTS sour. The coating doesn’t rub off in my hands in a pile of powder, so it sticks well to the traditional DOTS gumdrop. It like it when candy isn’t messy to eat.

Sour DOTS

Grape: These start off sour then build into a very juicy, standard grape flavor. Know what else tastes exactly like this? Grape tootsie pops. Not a surprise since they come from the same company!

Lemon: This one is amazing. Bright and zesty from the start. Has that beautiful, straight, authentic flavor of a real lemon. Like real sour lemons drops. So awesome!

Orange: Very smooth and plain. Has an base orange flavor, but with no tartness or zest to it.

Green Apple: Has that very acute, fruity, fake sour apple taste. It’s very floral and smooth, but has that funny accent to it that’s hard to lay one’s finger on.

Cherry: Sour at first from the dusting on the top, then the very bright, woodsy cherry flavors come through. They have a very acute berry edge to them which makes them floral and sweet. It
not too metallic at all surprisingly.

I was really impressed with these! I enjoyed them a lot, especially since the sour parts didn’t last very long. Sour or DOTS lovers alike, I really recommend these!

Junior Mints Pastels Box

Ooooo, another limited edition candy based on different colors! There’s been a few like these in the past, most standard candies have color variants for the holidays. Some do color variations for movie tie-ins. It’s been awhile since I’ve seen any, so I was surprised to see these at the local Dollar Tree. Considering that a lot of the Dollar Tree candy tends to be close to or past the expiration date on the package (or at least, from what I’ve noticed) I’m willing to bet these were a spring release earlier this year. I never actually saw them in the store, so I can’t say for sure.

Well, to be honest, there isn’t really anything special about these Pastel Junior Mints. They’re really just are regular Junior Mints but in pastel yellow and blue mockolate shells. That’s it. And I gotta admit, these candies don’t look good in these colors. You know how you have a friend who just looovees wearing that special puke green shirt, but it looks terrible on him? Well, that’s the case of these candies. These new colors make them appear special, but they look awful.

Junior Mints Pastels

The cracks in the shell are very visible with the new colors. So the candies end up looking beat up and unkempt. The taste the same as regular Junior Mints do. Strongly of mint with that creamy center, and a hint of chocolate from the mockolate outsides.

So, I can’t quite find a reason to recommend these, They look gross and they taste the same as the regular Junior Mints. Maybe if they were on sale or something? I don’t know. Try these if you dare, or if a color change would be something you’d get a kick out of.

Tootsie Mason Crows Package

Mason Crows are a classic/retro candy which, unlike most of genre, are actually pretty easy to find. You’d think I’d had tried them sooner because of this. Especially since I love black licorice. Sadly, you’re mistaken. I don’t know what took me so long to finally try these. They’ve been on my “to buy” list for such a long time, and I blame the fact that I mainly saw them in the large movie boxes in the 3-$3 bin in Walgreens. I didn’t have anything else I’d want to buy in the bunch though. I finally took the opportunity when the new Mike & Ike Alex’s Lemonade Stand mix appeared in the bunch.

Crows have quite the history. They’ve been around since the late 19th century and were originally called “Black Rose”. A typo at the manufacturers change the name to “Crows” and has remained that way ever since. They appear black at first, but upon closer examination and the right lighting, they’re actually a very dark green. These licorice gumdrops are very similar to Dots, dome shaped and squishy.

Tootsie Mason Crows

Since Crows look so much like Dots, I was expecting them to be the same texture: so hard and chewy that I’d be picking them out of my teeth for the next couple of day (yes, I exaggerate…a little). So imagine my surprise when I bit into one and having it be terribly soft and supple. I must have gotten a really fresh box and lucked out. Chewing them is so luxurious: they deliver and chew that’s substantial yet so silky smooth. It’s heavenly. The flavor is sweet of molasses at first, then a subtle licorice and anise flavors comes through. But it’s never strong, as it’s a mild flavor and it’s really wonderful. The aftertaste is nice and herbal, like good licorice should be.

I honestly didn’t expect these to be so good. The theater sized box I had went really fast and I expect to be stocking up on them again really really soon.
