Snickers 3X Chocolate

I found this Snickers 3X Chocolate in a local CVS in Eagle Rock on lunch break from work one day. My eyes were attracted to it immediately as I don’t seem to find Snickers limited editions much anymore. I completely zeroed in on the bright blue wrapper and the giant “3X” on it.

So how is this Snickers 3 times the chocolate? Well the package says it’s “Milk Chocolate, chocolate flavored nougat, chocolate caramel and peanuts”. Guess that is 3 whole chocolate elements in there.

This really smells intensely of chocolate with only a hint of peanuts at the end. My first bite was indeed a mouthful. At first it reminded me of brownies, then the flavor transforms once you hit the peanuts. They add a nutty saltiness to it which really levels out the chocolate’s sweetness. The chocolate caramel is surprisingly absent, s I don’t taste any of it at all. heck I don’t even see it when I take a bite. There’s no beautiful ribbon of caramel. So odd. The flavor pretty much is the same as a normal Snickers to me, it’s just that initial moment of the bite that tastes like brownies. That’s all that tasted different to me, really.

As far as Snicker’s bars go, this is n’t bad. I just didn’t find it tasting that differently from a normal Snickers. I’m more of a 3 Musketeers or a Milky Way girl, so as far as Snickers bars go, they just don’t excite me that much. Maybe more seasoned Snickers fans can taste the difference in the 3X Chocolate. But for me, it wasn’t anything new.

Goldenberg's Peanut Chews

Goldenberg’s Peanut Chews are a very well know candy if you’re a Philadelphia local. It’s a classic candy, as it’s been around since 1917. I hadn’t had one until summer 2005 where I stumbled across a promo for them on the streets of Manhattan. I tried the free samples I was given and feel in love with their flavor. It’s delicious and timeless.

Now some years later, Goldenberg’s Peanut Chews have re-designed the packaging and are trying to get the word out about Peanut Chews. I for once, am happy to help, as I know a “local” candy can sometimes have a hard time branching out. I feel they’re doing a good job, as I have seen Peanut Chews around here in Los Angeles on occasion. When Goldenberg’s Peanut Chews asked if I’d like some samples for a review, I excitedly said yes!

I want to start by saying I love the new packaging. It’s retro yet keeps the essence of the candy. It doesn’t look out of place on the candy shelf, and it’s eye catching at the same time. Peanut Chews come in two varieties, milk and dark chocolate. Each is color coded and easy to identify.

For those of you who don’t know what exactly is a peanut chew? It’s a chewy center made of peanuts mixed with a molasses then covered in chocolate. Simple yet tasty. I have to also say that, these Peanut Chews are not using real chocolate. They’re mockolate, as there’s no cocoa butter in there. It’s right there in the ingredients.

Goldenberg's Peanut Chews

The milk chocolate variety smells sweet and full of peanuts. The flavor is very heavy on the milk chocolate’s sweetness and the toasty peanuts. The chew is nice and think and there’s no hint of the molasses.

The dark chocolate has a very different flavor. The flavor is not as heavy of on the peanuts, you taste more of the chocolate and the molasses. I think I like the dark chocolate version better because the notes of the molasses is are really unique and wonderful flavor.

Goldenberg’s Peanut Chews are a candy that I keep coming back to. They have such a classic flavor and its simplicity is really delicious and addicting. That combined with the nostalgia factor and the connection with Philadelphia (which really means a lot to my Philly raised fiance!) makes Goldenberg’s Peanut Chews a candy that is found in my candy stash very often.

Ritter Sport Marzipan

I believe the first Ritter Sport bar I ever recall seeing was their Marzipan bar. Something about Germany and Marizpan catching my eye, or perhaps it was the very bright red wrapper. Either way, for some reason, I always felt this was their “signature” bar. My appreciate of marzipan come from my Dad, who is a big fan of the stuff. If it wasn’t for him letting me try marzipan as a kid I probably won’t have been exposed to it until college. I immediately liked marzipan, but it’s something I only treat myself to occasionally. The I realized that I had never reviewed the Ritter Marzipan bar, thus here I am with today’s review!

The first thing about this bar is that it’s dark chocolate. Which I think is a very wise choice, as marzipan can be very sweet. The square bar smells rich and sweet and has a beautiful sheen to it.

The marzipan is delicious. It’s moist, flavorful and has a really nice texture that’s both smooth and grainy at the same time. The chocolate snaps cleanly and easily when you take a bite. It doesn’t lose its form so the marzipan won’t ooze everywhere. The dark chocolate is flavorful, it’s got some nice deep coco flavors that are a little fruity and they balance well with the nice almond flavor of the marizpan. This isn’t too sweet, it’s just right. Love it!

Out of all the marzipan bars I’ve had, I think the Ritter Marzipan bar stands up really well with the best of them. Dark chocolate and marzipan is a match made in heaven, and it’s nice to see a bar like this that’s so easily accessible in American stores. If you’ve never had marzipan before, and you’re a fan of almonds, I really think you should give it a try. This Ritter Sport bar is a great place to start.

See's Rocky Road Egg Box

I will start off saying that this egg from See’s Candies is big. Really big. 9.5 oz of chocolate, marshmallows, walnuts and sugar big. 1200 calories big. Larger than than my hand in a fist big. I think you get the idea. I know over sized chocolate eggs are big during Easter. I see them every year. Yet, I have never really had one. I think it’s the sheer size of them. I can’t imagine myself eating something that big. I’m happy with the smaller, more “normal” portions of candies. Still, I was definitively excited when I got this egg as a sample from See’s. This is my first time to try one of these over sized eggs, and I’m pumped to do so.

Liked I expressed before, this this is big. Because of that, I didn’t really know where to start with this thing. Should I just pick it up and chomp on it? Take a knife and cute it like a block of cheese? Such questions ran through my mind. The egg is very beautiful though, with a nice chocolate shell and pretty decorations on it. A ring of swirled white frosting circles the top of the egg, and yellow roses spread across the top.

See's Rocky Road Egg

It smells very lightly sweet. I try to break off a rose to nibble and I find the frosting is very hard. Rock hard in fact. It crumbles in my mouth like sugar rocks. It’s a pleasing texture.

I decide that a knife is the best way to get into this chocolate rocky road egg. I try to slice off the bottom edge, but find that the frosting and the walnuts make it somewhat hard to cut. Still, with more force I manage to slice off a chunk. The inside is big, sticky, fluffy marshmallow and generously sized walnuts. Eagerly, I take a bite.

The chocolate is sweet, and comes off nice as creamy as eat it. The texture is very exciting, as you get the smoothness of the chocolate, the spongy marshmallow and the crunchy walnuts. The walnuts are fresh and deliver that wonderful, nutty flavor. The marshmallow is just sweet, and because of the walnuts and chocolate it’s hard to tell if it has any flavor of it’s own. Overall the flavor is really good, and I have enjoyed this so fay way more than any Rocky Road ice cream I’ve ever had.

For any fans of Rocky Road, I think this egg is a must. I think it incorporated everything Rocky Road should be. I was impressed with this egg, as I am with most See’s products. I can imagine this would delight anyone on Easter, as giant Easter eggs are, well, fun. And I think this egg is very fun!

Ferreo Eggs Hazelnut

I have been seeing these bags of Ferrero eggs on the shelves in a lot of places this year. They come in a small bag like the Lindt Lindors but in a fun, pastel colored package. They are described on the front as “crispy eggs with a creamy hazelnut filling”. I like the “European” feel of these, they remind me of a Kinder Bueno, but in egg shaped form. I’m really drawn to that sort of thing, so I nabbed a bag for the blog.

The bag holds a lot of eggs. So I felt like I got a good deal for the price that I paid for them. The eggs are small, and I’m trying to think of a size comparison. They’re smaller than a golf ball, but bigger than the mini Cadbury creme eggs you see this time of year. I’d say they’re around the size of a kumquat? I think I’ll go with that.

Each egg is individually wrapped in foil, with a gold top and bottom with a colored band with the Ferrero logo on it. Unwrapping the egg, it has a beautiful medium brown color. It smells very sweet and milky. I get intense notes of cream and caramel in there. The aroma is just heavenly.

My first bite reveals that there’s a wafer shell just inside the chocolate covering, so you get this nice crisp when you break into it. The texture contrast is really nice. The hazelnut interior is creamy and delicious. It’s like Nutella on steroids. It’s intensely flavorful and nutty, with a great chocolate flavor. Overall with the chocolate shell and the wafer, this little egg packs a whollop in the flavor department.

They’re so flavorful and luxurious, I find that I can only eat one of these at a time. They’re heavenly with a cup of coffee in the morning. I can see these as being a nice little addition to Easter Brunch. I managed to try the other variant of these, the chocolate filled egg, thanks to a co-works candy generosity. It was good, but it wasn’t chocolately. I certainly think that the hazelnut is the better flavor of the two.
