Brach's Sundaes Neapolitan Coconut

When OldTimeCandy.com kindly offers me some candy samples to review, I knew I wanted to get some things I haven’t seen in a long time. I love “old” and “nostalgic” candy. So after some pursuing their selection, I settled on these Brach’s Sundaes Neapolitan Coconut to go with the Brach’s Jelly Nougats that I reviewed earlier. I also remember seeing these all over in grocery store bins since childhood. I’m happy to know that they’re still being sold.

These candies are very pretty to look at. Like the jelly nougats, they’re slightly rectangular with three colors stripes. Brown at the top, white in the middle and pink at the bottom. It mimics the Neapolitan ice cream that is so popular!

The candy smells heavily of coconut. The candy feels dense and moist when you finally unwrap it and hold it in your fingers. The flavor is intense coconut. It’s moist, dense, chewy and so sweet. I didn’t notice any difference in the flavoring between the three colors. They all have that fantastic coconut flavor. One candy is satisfying on it’s own, so you don’t have to worry about having more than you’d like with these.

if you’re into coconut, you must give these a try. You can find coconut candies like this in many variations, these are the smallest ones I’ve seen. Regardless, I was pleased with how tasty these were, my memory of them totally held up. I highly recommend you try them.

Brach's Jelly Nougats

There’s a lot of candies that feel “timeless” to me. A lot of Brach’s candies fall into that category for me. These Jelly Nougats are certainly one of them. It seems like I’ve always seen them around in grocery store bins. One thing I’ve noticed since moving to Los Angeles is that I don’t’ see these Brach’s bins in the stores here, which make me a little sad since I’m so accustomed to see them.

OldTimeCandy.com was kind enough to write me and offer some candy samples for me to review. I was super excited to see they carried these Jelly Nougats since it’s been so long since I’ve seen them sold anywhere. I immediately selected a few and eagerly awaited for their arrival.

Upon arriving, I immediately opened the bag as I was excited to finally try one after all these years. They are as pretty as I remember them. They’re slightly rectangular little blocks that have a creamy vanilla colored base with bright chucks of jelly in them. Often in tones of ruby, orange and yellow. I tried to squish them a little with my fingers and the nougat has no give to it. I was a little worried that they were a tad old since they felt so rock hard.

The candy smells sweet with a hint of vanilla. Taking a bite I was relieved to find that these are actually pretty soft to bite into. My teeth easily took a bite of the candy off and it softened even more as I chewed it. The flavor is creamy and has a soft, barely there vanilla flavor. It has slight fruity notes from the jellies. I get some “red” flavors, while others are more orange and even lemon. It’s a nice mix of flavors, and it’s very delicate and not overpowering at all.

I really enjoyed these, but since they’re such a “stranger” candy because of the intense chew and subtle flavors, I don’t think they’re for everyone. I really appreciate how unique these candies are, so I will always be excited to see them. Since they are on the rarer side, if you seem them, it’s not a bad idea to give them a try.

Starburst Tongue Tangles

I got this small package of Starburst Tongue Tangles from my sister who thoughtfully gave it to me when she returned from a trip to Scotland. I am always excited to try foreign candies, especially ones that have a foundation here in the United States. It’s interesting for me to see how candies translate for a different country. So you may understand my excitement for this candy and the thoughtfulness behind it.

At first I thought these Starburst were going to be chews like the normal Starbursts here. I found out otherwise when I opened them. The texture is like a chewy Gushers fruit snack. The outside appears to be hard and molded, but its chewy and soft and there’s a flavored liquid center inside.

Banana and Mango: Sweet banana exterior is mild and starchy flavored. It’s thankfully does not too much like perfume. The mango center is bright, fresh, and full of tropical flavor. It’s much more intense than the banana exterior and they blend nicely.

Blueberry and Lemon: Blueberry is perfumey and berry tasting. The lemon center is extremely tart and artificial. It’s too sour with an odd metallic flavor to it. I was very disappointed.

Apricot and Cherry: Apricot is sweet and perfumey. It tastes sweeter than peaches, with more of a fruity flavor than a perfume one. The cherry is very tart and tastes more tropical than jammy to me. It’s tart and sweet yet lack a cherry essence.

Out of all the flavors my favorite is the Banana and Mango.

I found two of the three flavors in this mix a little too artificial for me, so I am sorry to say that I didn’t like this mix very much. I think the Starburst gummies we get out here are a better version of this. Still, if you’re really into Starburst and have the opportunity to try these. I do recommend that you give them a go yourself.

See's Rocky Road Egg Box

I will start off saying that this egg from See’s Candies is big. Really big. 9.5 oz of chocolate, marshmallows, walnuts and sugar big. 1200 calories big. Larger than than my hand in a fist big. I think you get the idea. I know over sized chocolate eggs are big during Easter. I see them every year. Yet, I have never really had one. I think it’s the sheer size of them. I can’t imagine myself eating something that big. I’m happy with the smaller, more “normal” portions of candies. Still, I was definitively excited when I got this egg as a sample from See’s. This is my first time to try one of these over sized eggs, and I’m pumped to do so.

Liked I expressed before, this this is big. Because of that, I didn’t really know where to start with this thing. Should I just pick it up and chomp on it? Take a knife and cute it like a block of cheese? Such questions ran through my mind. The egg is very beautiful though, with a nice chocolate shell and pretty decorations on it. A ring of swirled white frosting circles the top of the egg, and yellow roses spread across the top.

See's Rocky Road Egg

It smells very lightly sweet. I try to break off a rose to nibble and I find the frosting is very hard. Rock hard in fact. It crumbles in my mouth like sugar rocks. It’s a pleasing texture.

I decide that a knife is the best way to get into this chocolate rocky road egg. I try to slice off the bottom edge, but find that the frosting and the walnuts make it somewhat hard to cut. Still, with more force I manage to slice off a chunk. The inside is big, sticky, fluffy marshmallow and generously sized walnuts. Eagerly, I take a bite.

The chocolate is sweet, and comes off nice as creamy as eat it. The texture is very exciting, as you get the smoothness of the chocolate, the spongy marshmallow and the crunchy walnuts. The walnuts are fresh and deliver that wonderful, nutty flavor. The marshmallow is just sweet, and because of the walnuts and chocolate it’s hard to tell if it has any flavor of it’s own. Overall the flavor is really good, and I have enjoyed this so fay way more than any Rocky Road ice cream I’ve ever had.

For any fans of Rocky Road, I think this egg is a must. I think it incorporated everything Rocky Road should be. I was impressed with this egg, as I am with most See’s products. I can imagine this would delight anyone on Easter, as giant Easter eggs are, well, fun. And I think this egg is very fun!

Ferreo Eggs Hazelnut

I have been seeing these bags of Ferrero eggs on the shelves in a lot of places this year. They come in a small bag like the Lindt Lindors but in a fun, pastel colored package. They are described on the front as “crispy eggs with a creamy hazelnut filling”. I like the “European” feel of these, they remind me of a Kinder Bueno, but in egg shaped form. I’m really drawn to that sort of thing, so I nabbed a bag for the blog.

The bag holds a lot of eggs. So I felt like I got a good deal for the price that I paid for them. The eggs are small, and I’m trying to think of a size comparison. They’re smaller than a golf ball, but bigger than the mini Cadbury creme eggs you see this time of year. I’d say they’re around the size of a kumquat? I think I’ll go with that.

Each egg is individually wrapped in foil, with a gold top and bottom with a colored band with the Ferrero logo on it. Unwrapping the egg, it has a beautiful medium brown color. It smells very sweet and milky. I get intense notes of cream and caramel in there. The aroma is just heavenly.

My first bite reveals that there’s a wafer shell just inside the chocolate covering, so you get this nice crisp when you break into it. The texture contrast is really nice. The hazelnut interior is creamy and delicious. It’s like Nutella on steroids. It’s intensely flavorful and nutty, with a great chocolate flavor. Overall with the chocolate shell and the wafer, this little egg packs a whollop in the flavor department.

They’re so flavorful and luxurious, I find that I can only eat one of these at a time. They’re heavenly with a cup of coffee in the morning. I can see these as being a nice little addition to Easter Brunch. I managed to try the other variant of these, the chocolate filled egg, thanks to a co-works candy generosity. It was good, but it wasn’t chocolately. I certainly think that the hazelnut is the better flavor of the two.
