Toblerone White

Toblerone is a chocolate I didn’t get any exposure to until I got into college. I guess my parents figured it’s pretty large for a chocolate bar for a kid, and my high school years were spent living in the countryside, so I didn’t have any stores close by that carried it. At least I don’t’ recall seeing it ever, and this was before CVS and other large drug stores started to stock them. I’ve only had the milk, dark, and seasonal raisin variety previously, so you could imagine my excitement when I saw a white variety existed. I quickly snatched it up.

For those of you unfamiliar with Toblerone, it’s a long chocolate bar that comes in a triangular box. The mountain icon on the package has a bear in it. The chocolate itself is molded into ridges so that it looks like mountains and easily broke off to enjoy one at a time.

So how does it taste? The white chocolate is excellent. It’s sweet, buttery and has a slight chocolate flavor as good white chocolate should. It melts wonderfully in the mouth. The crispy nougat bits in the chocolate has a very pronounced honey flavor with a nutty edge to them. The chocolate and the nougat blends wonderfully together to make a very satisfying flavor. The nougat bits are quite sticky if try to chew them. They get stuck in your teeth easily, so I recommend the whole “letting it melt in your mouth” strategy here.

The bar is awesome and I must try for any white chocolate lover. While I love it, I think if this is your first time having a Toblerone you should try the milk chocolate first, then try the white chocolate variety.

3 Musketeers Marshmallow Bag

I was really surprised to find these in Rite Aid the other day. I was on my lunch break and my friend needed to run into the store for some batteries. I killed my time pursuing the candy aisle, feeling pretty confident I’ve found most everything that needed finding this year. I then laid eyes on this bag, which really looks like another other normal, Easter themed 3 Musketeers bag, and saw the words “Limited Edition” written on the top. This caused me to take a second look, and I saw that under the 3 Musketeers logo, the word “Marshmallow” was written. O ho, something new here? Needless to say I brought a bag home with me.

Marshmallow has always been a “big” candy theme for Easter. Marshmallow eggs, rabbits and of course the infamous Peeps began with Easter. So it doesn’t surprised me terribly that 3 Musketeers would jump on the bandwagon.

3 Musketeers Marshmallow

The candy pieces inside come in little squares like the normal minis. The look the same, the smell is very sweet, buttery and a hint of chocolate. Each are individually wrapped so they’re easy to bring a few to work or nibble some with coffee.

Biting one in half, you see a pristine white interior of fluffy nougat. Notice, the interior isn’t marshmallow, but marshmallow flavored nougat. The texture is light, airy and very rich feeling in the mouth. I get a very strong and sweet vanilla flavor, which gives it that “marshmallow” quality. In fact, the vanilla brings out the chocolate flavors more, so it’s a very flavorful combination. This is still very sweet like all 3 Musketeers, so be sure to have a drink handy.

Overall, this candy is really just a 3 Musketeers with a vanilla nougat interior. Get some normal 3 musketeer minis and the some of those fall released strawberry ones together and you have a Neapolitan 3 Musketeers much like the original candy bar! Cool!

Snickers Peanut Butter Square

There’s a new Snickers on the block! I am unsure about the distribution of these, but I’m starting to see them around in most stores, so chances are they’ll be easy to find. I believe I picked this one up in Target, so that would be a good place to start checking. So what is this new Snickers? And why is it squared?

Well, to start, there’s it extremely bright, eye-catching yellow package. This Snickers also doesn’t have it’s normal caramel stripe, but instead a ribbon of peanut butter. The comes in the squared bit, unlike all the other Snickers (aside from the mini’s, of course) this one isn’t one long bar. It’s broken into two, square candy pieces. They’re easily an inch by inch square. What makes up this bar is a layer of peanut butter, a nougat layer with peanut chunks in it, all enrobed in milk chocolate.

The wrapper encourages you to twist the package closed and “save one for later”. I gave the other square to my boyfriend.

The texture of these are dryer than normal Snickers bars. The caramel added some moisture to the bar, but since here it’s been replaced with the peanut butter, it’s a much sticker candy to eat. It tastes good, it’s a rich peanut butter and chocolate flavor. The peanut butter is smooth, creamy and salty and blends nicely with the chocolate flavor. This bar still has the bits of peanut chunks like a regular Snickers does. It’s a great candy if you’re a peanut butter fan, it’s not as intense as a Reese’s but it’s pretty close.

I’m not sure how much of this bar feels like a regular Snickers since the peanut butter really intensifies this bar. It’s really tasty and I plan on returning to it soon since it’s a fantastic taste. A must try if you’re a peanut butter fan.

Golden Bonbon Green Tea Nougat

This find was a surprise to be sure. It’s been ages since I’ve seen, much less had any Golden Bonbon torrone/nougat. Yet, there is was just sitting on the shelf of my local Asian Market, just waiting for me to find it. I was delighted to see this East/West fusion of such a classic candy; the greet tea (matcha) flavor blended into Italian torrone. Not to mention I’ve had Golden Bonbon’s nougat in the past and I’ve greatly enjoyed it.

The package is a wonderful grassy green color that catches your eye right away. I love the little window on the front that lets you see each individually wrapped piece. It leaves nothing to the imagination and shows that this candy has nothing to hide.

The nougat comes in nice, bite sized pieces. The color is slightly greenish, from the matcha powder I’m sure. Each peace is amply studded with almonds, which have a wonderful fresh crunch when you bite into them. The nougat texture is soft and chewy, and the almonds and fresh and crunchy. A wonderful texture contrast.

The flavor is sweet at the start, then the grassy flavors of the green tea come forward. They mingle with the nutty notes of the almonds, and I gotta say, it’s really excellent. I haven’t tried anything like it before, and it works really, really well. I love it.

If you’re a fan of matcha, I’d certainly give this a try. It might be a bit adventurous for many traditional nougat lovers, but I can see many would find a new favorite with these.

Wazoo Bars

I found the Wazoo bars totally by accident. I was in the dreaded Wal-Mart, a place I try to be in as infrequently as possible, and was giving the candy shelves by the checkouts a quick once-over. My eyes immediately landed on this freakishly bright packaging on the very bottom shelf. I almost passed over it, as it read as a toy or novelty of some sort at first. I could help but laugh once I had the bars in hand, as they’re so colorful and punchy, but in a way that’s more scary than attractive. Still, they appealed to me somehow, and I took a few home. I could help but wonder what wonderful chemicals I was going to ingest when trying these new flamboyant bars out. Sometimes I gotta take one for the team.

Literally the day after I made my purchase, Cybele reviewed the Blue Razz bar, so I was pleased to know I wasn’t the only one stumbling across these crazy new candy bars. I’ve held back on giving this review in hopes of more information hitting the internet about these bars. Recently a website and commercials started to appear on YouTube.

Ok, on with the description. Wazoo bars are the standard rectangular shape, and aren’t as heavy and they appear. They have, from the illustration on the package, two colored layers of nougat on the inside, covered in a colorful mockolate coating and topped with sprinkles. The website calls the insides “taffy” and the sprinkles “nuggets”, but it seems to be the case of different semantics.

Wazoo Blue Razz

Blue Razz: This is the bright blue one, and it looks alien to me. The sprinkles/nuggets on top are like Nerds, but round and not all bumpy. Their colors are pink, yellow and blue and match the coating nicely (what can I say, I’m an artist, I appreciate these thing!). The bar smells so strongly of raspberries, berries, perfume and cotton candy. It’s quite overpowering.

Taking a bite, the bright blue bar has inside that’s bright pink on top and bright deep blue on the bottom. It’s breathtaking, but not in the way I’d consider a food.

The flavor is immediately fruity with flavors of blue raspberry with a taste zest to it. It has a yogurt-like quality to it. The nougat/taffy interior is smooth with a bit of grain. The taste is a nice mix of sweet and tart with a creamy note. If creamsicles came in a raspberry version, it’d taste like this I’d imagine.

The sprinkles have a sharp burst of flavor to them which I was surprised by, since usually sprinkles are usually flavorless.

As awful as it may be to say, I…like it.

Wazoo Wild Berriez

Wild Berriez: light purple outside, red, pink, blue yellow sprinkles. I thought the other one smelled strong, this one is so much more pungent. Wow! It smells of grape soda, cotton candy and kool aid. It’s a tasty, 100% artificial smell, like I’d image some icky popular celebrities might smell.

The inside has two layers like the Blue Razz, with a yellow bottom and pink top. Again, the sprinkles are flavored, some tasted of grape and other were just sweet.

The flavor is milder than expected, especially since the smell was so strong. This bar is more sweet and less tart than the Blue Rass. It actually tastes, more…authentic. Can I even use that word describing something with this color?  The first taste is of sweet strawberries, then blueberries (real ones!) and blackberries. Sweet, juicy and floral. The texture is that nice chewy smooth nougat, and even after trying this bar, I’m unsure if I’d call this taffy.

Ok, so aside from all the visual warnings that these bars give with their fake, garish colors. The flavors are actually pretty fun. I don’t think it’s something I’d buy with any regularity out of fear of turning my insides strange colors. If you’re the kind of person who always enjoyed those oddly-colored yogurts, or Green Eggs and Ham, well, these bars are worth a shot.
