5 RPM

Onto the third of the 5 Gum flavors that I’ve gathered to review. This one immediately confused me. RPM? What am I supposed to make out of that? What flavor am I supposed to surmise? What hint am supposed to glean? Other than, you know, the fact that this is clearly marketed to men with a name like that. Since I am not a man, maybe I am not meant to understand. Despite their marketing ploys, I do have taste buds, so I will get to the bottom of what RPM is about.

RPM can apply to a few things. I think of record players and car engines. Dude things, I suppose. The sticks of gum are wrapped in a lemon-lime yellow green and have an interesting aroma. It smells fruity with a spicy edge to it. Not sure if to say the scent is herbal or not, but it makes me think of apple pie for a strange reason. It’s similar to smelling a fresh cinnamon stick, somehow.

The gum’s aroma gets even stranger as I pull it out to chew. The spicy note I detected earlier is even more powerful now, and it reminds me of potpourri. I ask myself if I really want to taste this gum that badly. The stick of gum is a nice light yellow, and trying not to think more about it, I pop the piece in my mouth. The flavor stars off fruity, but it reminds me of how red licorice tastes. Something about it just tasted “red”. The flavor is metallic and has notes of cherries. Oddly enough the flavor gets somewhat sour the more I chew it, which I find interesting. Again, the flavor and texture quickly deteriorate as you chew, and soon it becomes faint and tough.

This flavor was, tasty but odd. I am not sure if it’s something I would specifically crave. But, if in a bind I’d certainly have it again. It’s not favorite, but it’s certainly tastier than many. If only it lasted longer!

5 React Squared

Gum is already somewhat of a neglected candy for me, as it’s something I don’t buy often but I do try to review for the blog when I see something interesting. 5 Gum us a brand that I don’t pay very much attention to. I believe it’s a gum that market to men, with its intense black background and names like “React Squared”. So as a female you can imagine that I a drawn toward the more colorful “Fruity Unicorn Sparkle” flavors than these intense looking gums in black packaged with names that refer to energy outputs. But that it exactly why I decided that I needed to give 5 Gum a few tries.

The gum is wrapped in black foil, which is very striking looking. They almost disappear into the packaging. The gum smells like a mix of jam and cherry pie. It’s very juicy and fruity smelling.

I was taken aback to see that the stick of gum is dark grey in color. I don’t think I’ve ever seen gum colored like that before. The texture is incredibly soft as you begin to chew. The flavor is very fruity, and bring up the flavors of dark cherries. I also get notes of cola and some metallic notes. The flavor comes across as very flavorful and juicy. The flavor quickly starts to fade as you get into chewing for about a minute. As the taste mellows, it reminds me of red licorice: fruity and “red”. It’s a nice flavor, it’s just a shame it doesn’t last longer.

It seems this gum suffers from the “gum paradox” that I’ve heard other bloggers refer to. The tastier the gum is, the shorter the time the flavor lasts. So even though I am not the biggest fan of cherry gum, it was still more tasty than some gums I’ve had. Alas, the flavor is almost completely gone in the first minute that you chew it. I can see this working for you if you only wanted a quick flavor pick me up. Personally I like something with a little more stamina. I like my flavor to last longer. That’s not to say that this gum is bad, it just was really tasty and would have liked to experience this gum longer, that’s all.

TicTac Strawberry Fields

Tic Tacs are a candy that I always enjoyed and was fascinated with when I was a kid. I loved how all my friend’s Moms seemed to carry them in their purses. Pulling them out while at soccer games and hearing that familiar shaking should as a Tic Tac tumbled into your hand. It was a point in time where I didn’t bother to learn the flavors, as I think I was too young to read these at some points. So I knew them as the “white ones” or the “green ones”. The “orange ones” were my favorite.

Now fast forward to the present where I do buy the occasional box of Tic Tacs, but usually it’s a new flavor that draws me in. As far as my childhood fascination goes, I surprisingly don’t buy them much. Now here is the newest flavor I found on store shelves, Tic Tac Strawberry Fields.

The Tic Tacs come in two colors, one a light pink and the other a more traditional pink-pink. Oddly enough when I checked the website, they make note of this being a “strawberry and cream” flavor even though I don’t see that anywhere on the package.

The candies smell just sweet, mostly of marshmallows. The packaging design is pretty with strawberry vines with ripe berries on them frame the tic tac logo. the green vines accented with the red strawberries is very pretty.

The flavor starts out tasting like the aroma; of vanilla marshmallow. Then a sweet, berry flavor develops. As it grows it tastes more and more like strawberry. As it hits its apex I’m strongly reminded of strawberry jam. It’s sweet, fruity, with a light floral note to it. It’s a lot of flavor for just one little Tic Tac. I’m impressed. The only thing is I don’t taste any “cream” in there that the website suggests. Just to be sure, I tried both color several times to see if the flavor was any different between the two. The only thing I notcied was the pink’s flavor appeared more quickly than the light pink one.

I liked these a lot. I know I don’t have Tic Tacs often, but I’d imagine a new flavor added to the mix is very refreshing. So adding some strawberry into your Tic Tac cycle, you won’t be disappointed. I liked having this bow in my purse for moments when I needed a quick flavor pick me up.

Sunkist Orange Slices

I love candy orange slices. When I was a kid I was allowed to grab a few from the bins when I went to the grocery store with my Mom. To this day they’re a candy that I enjoy. I’m a little sad to find that they’re getting harder to find nowadays, but I hope that’s just the candy trend right now and hopefully they’ll stat showing up more frequently. So imagine my excitement when I was contacted by Jelly Belly asking if I’d be interesting in trying some samples to review. Being a big fan of jelly belly, I said yes, but I didn’t know what they planned on sending to me. These Sunkist Orange Slices where in that package.

I admit I haven’t had the Sunkist version of orange slices, only Brach’s and some other “store brands” whose name I don’t remember at the moment. These orange slices are smaller and softer than the ones I’m used to. They still carry the same shape with the rippled top of accentuate the orange slice shape. These are most squishy to the touch, and the granulated sugar is has a nice texture to it.

The flavor is similar to the Sunkist Gem orange flavor. It’s bright and fruity, with great sweet and zesty accents to make it come across as very “juicy”. Because these are smaller and softer, they’re very “pop-able”, you find yourself eating a bunch instead of stopping at one or two. Very yummy and very addicting.

Even though these are smaller I can easily imagine them as additions to vanilla ice cream and as decorations on top of cupcakes. They’re perfectly addicting as is but I can’t help but think of creative ways they could be used in other sweets and desserts. I think the orange slice is a really overlooked classic candy, and these Sunkist Orange slices are a wonderful addition to the genre.

Sunkist Fruit Gems

Sunkist Gems have been around for as long as I can remember. I have eaten them a bunch of times over the years, when I get that special craving for citrus gummi candies. One of the grocery stores that I used to frequent back East (I still love and miss you Wegmans!) had a large candy bin section, with a big barrel of individually wrapped Sunkist Gems. I’d go through and pick out the grapefruit and lemons ones for myself as a treat every so often. They’re so yummy! Jelly Belly PR recently contacted me asking if I’d like to try some samples for the blog. Being such a big fan of their products I said yes, not knowing what they’d be mailing me. Lo and behold, I had a bag of Sunkist Fruit Gems!
The gems are round discs, a little smaller than the size of a poker chip, and stand at about 1/4 inch tall. They’re colorful, but in a muted colored with fruit juice kind of way, and covered with a coating of granulated sugar.

The gems come in five flavors:

Orange: This flavor is really great. It has nice nice orangy flavor to it that’s zesty but sweet. It almost has a tangerine taste to it from the zest, but it’s smoother than that. The flavor comes across as very juicy and satisfying. Really yummy.

Lemon: This flavor is awesome. It’s tart, zesty and juicy. All that a lemon should be. The nuances in this reminds me of limoncello. Very flavorful and so delicious.

Grapefruit: I was looking forward to this one the most. This one is smooth, so smooth. The flavor is a bit more delicate than the lemon and orange, yet the flavor is that richness of grapefruit I expect and look forward to. It has a great, juicy taste that is both sweet and sour, with a hint of bitterness. Really yummy.

Raspberry: Raspberry is sweet and lightly floral. It has a nice juicy berry-ness to the flavor but it’s not very intense. Other than that it’s just sweet with no real defining notes.

Blueberry: Blueberry is sweet and has an perfumey flavor to it. I taste berries, but not specifically blueberries. Something about it is oddly “red” though, like hints of red licorice laces. It’s tasty ,and out of all the flavors in the bag I had the most of this one.
I do feel a little disappointed with the Raspberry and Blueberry flavors, not because I didn’t like how thy tasted, but more because I miss how these were a citrus fruit mix. The lime flavor got booted and these were added in. It does add more to the rainbow of colors. I shared these with my fiance and he just raved about them. Little did I know that these are a childhood favorite of his (I’ve never seen him by them himself) so he really enjoyed having these again. We both really enjoyed these and now that I know how much he loves them, I’ll be buying these more often!
