C.Howards is a very classic candy company that specialized in Gum and Mints, which are two genres of candy that I’m lukewarm on. Still, I came across this roll of the Violet Mints in the grocery store. I felt like I struck gold as I picked one up, as it’s rare to see such classic candy about nowadays.
Considering the packaging, I expected gum for some reason. Instead I found these mints to be packed compressed dextrose packets. Color me surprised! The mints are square, with “C.Howards” written in the center and a raised edge for a border along the sides.
The tablets smell strongly of violets, which is to be expected. It’s a very fresh and herbal smell. The aroma doesn’t really entice me to eat them, but it doesn’t really repel me either.
I picked up a my first tablet and popped it into my mouth. Immediately I began to chew, which slowly came to a halt as my facial expression went from “Hmm, interesting” to “Ew, what is this?”. Let’s just say the taste is vile. It’s terribly flowery and not very sweet at all. It tasted as if I had just shoved an old drawer sachet in my mouth. I could only take the flavor for a couple of seconds before I spit it out.
As much as I love retro candies, these Violet mints just don’t do it for me. If you enjoy eating flowers, you might like these. Otherwise I think these are best left alone.
