Nougat
I found the Wazoo bars totally by accident. I was in the dreaded Wal-Mart, a place I try to be in as infrequently as possible, and was giving the candy shelves by the checkouts a quick once-over. My eyes immediately landed on this freakishly bright packaging on the very bottom shelf. I almost passed over it, as it read as a toy or novelty of some sort at first. I could help but laugh once I had the bars in hand, as they’re so colorful and punchy, but in a way that’s more scary than attractive. Still, they appealed to me somehow, and I took a few home. I could help but wonder what wonderful chemicals I was going to ingest when trying these new flamboyant bars out. Sometimes I gotta take one for the team.
Literally the day after I made my purchase, Cybele reviewed the Blue Razz bar, so I was pleased to know I wasn’t the only one stumbling across these crazy new candy bars. I’ve held back on giving this review in hopes of more information hitting the internet about these bars. Recently a website and commercials started to appear on YouTube.
Ok, on with the description. Wazoo bars are the standard rectangular shape, and aren’t as heavy and they appear. They have, from the illustration on the package, two colored layers of nougat on the inside, covered in a colorful mockolate coating and topped with sprinkles. The website calls the insides “taffy” and the sprinkles “nuggets”, but it seems to be the case of different semantics.
Blue Razz: This is the bright blue one, and it looks alien to me. The sprinkles/nuggets on top are like Nerds, but round and not all bumpy. Their colors are pink, yellow and blue and match the coating nicely (what can I say, I’m an artist, I appreciate these thing!). The bar smells so strongly of raspberries, berries, perfume and cotton candy. It’s quite overpowering.
Taking a bite, the bright blue bar has inside that’s bright pink on top and bright deep blue on the bottom. It’s breathtaking, but not in the way I’d consider a food.
The flavor is immediately fruity with flavors of blue raspberry with a taste zest to it. It has a yogurt-like quality to it. The nougat/taffy interior is smooth with a bit of grain. The taste is a nice mix of sweet and tart with a creamy note. If creamsicles came in a raspberry version, it’d taste like this I’d imagine.
The sprinkles have a sharp burst of flavor to them which I was surprised by, since usually sprinkles are usually flavorless.
As awful as it may be to say, I…like it.
Wild Berriez: light purple outside, red, pink, blue yellow sprinkles. I thought the other one smelled strong, this one is so much more pungent. Wow! It smells of grape soda, cotton candy and kool aid. It’s a tasty, 100% artificial smell, like I’d image some icky popular celebrities might smell.
The inside has two layers like the Blue Razz, with a yellow bottom and pink top. Again, the sprinkles are flavored, some tasted of grape and other were just sweet.
The flavor is milder than expected, especially since the smell was so strong. This bar is more sweet and less tart than the Blue Rass. It actually tastes, more…authentic. Can I even use that word describing something with this color? The first taste is of sweet strawberries, then blueberries (real ones!) and blackberries. Sweet, juicy and floral. The texture is that nice chewy smooth nougat, and even after trying this bar, I’m unsure if I’d call this taffy.
Ok, so aside from all the visual warnings that these bars give with their fake, garish colors. The flavors are actually pretty fun. I don’t think it’s something I’d buy with any regularity out of fear of turning my insides strange colors. If you’re the kind of person who always enjoyed those oddly-colored yogurts, or Green Eggs and Ham, well, these bars are worth a shot.

Even on the East Coast, I have heard tales of the wonder and delight about the See’s Awesome Nut & Chew Bar. My friends out west all rave about it and I never understood what the fuss was about since I’d hadn’t eaten one before. It wasn’t until I read Cybele’s review of the bar that I specifically began to crave it. My love of chocolate and good nougat just called to me in this bar, yet I dawdled in purchasing myself some. It was only this past summer where I located them in a See’s store and bought a bunch to compensate.
The bar’s wrapper describes it as “chewy nougat with almonds and honey covered in dark chocolate”. I love the look of this bar, or should I saw the wrapper. The red is pleasing to look at, and the yellow lettering has a classic feel to it. The little bee is a whimsy element, and reminds me that I’m in for a real treat.
Unwrapped the bar is lovely. Long and slender with the dark chocolate looking glossy and flawless. The dark chocolate is perfect for this bar, and I’m glad they didn’t decide to use a milk chocolate. It smells lightly sweet with nice notes of cinnamon, coconut, coffee, and cocoa.
The nougat is immediately impressive as you can really taste the honey in it. The almonds are crunchy and fresh. The bar’s texture is a nice chew that’s not flimsy, yet still soft so it’s satisfying. You can tell the ingredients are pure, simple and combined to make something really out of this world. I know it’s a short description, but it’s accurate since the flavors are very straightforward and clean cut. It’s simply something I suggest you to experience yourself.
I was able to by more of these back in December and everyone I shared them with were immediately addicted. Just a warning.
You have to be pretty darned confident to name a candy bar with “awesome” in it. This bar lives up to it’s name. It’s so good. It’s a good thing I don’t live in California otherwise I’d be eating these all day.

I noticed these in my local Wawa and just stopped dead in my tracks as soon as I saw them. Being so enthusiastic about candy, it’s rare to see something new, and these Zitner’s eggs were certainly something new to me. I scooped up all the flavors they had to take home to taste, giggling all the way.
After a little research I found that Zitner is a candy company local to Philadelphia, so it’d make sense they’d be carried by a local store like Wawa. Other than the fact they’ve been around for some time, they’re a bit of a retro/classic candy in that sense. The eggs are small, about 1 1/8 oz and have a wonderful vintage design to them that’s very appealing.
Butter Creme Egg: The chocolate is very dark and the shape is not egg like at all, more like a disfigured rectangle with rounded corners. It smells sweet and coconutty as opposed to chocolates or like butter. A good sign? The ingredients say it is dark chocolate or milk chocolate (real chocolate, yet it had milk fat in it, and it’s processed with alkali so no wonder it’s so dark) so I guess it’s a game to try and figure out which? Odd. The shell has a good thickness and makes a appealing “klock” noise in my mouth when I bite into it. It’s very sweet, but I do get notes of cocoa, so it’s all good, but sugar is definitely king here. The center is more of a creme, like the label says, yet I was still surprised since I was expecting that fluffy, nougat like creme found in the Russell Stover Eggs. This is much more akin to the Cadbury Creme Egg. It’s disappointing that I get no butter flavor from it at all, it’s just sweet. Granted, it’s a nice, overpowering sweet but it’s still sweet. I wanted me some butter flavor.
Butter Krak Egg: Firstly, very odd name, even with the misspelling. This also doesn’t look like an egg, and I wished it looked more like the Butter Creme egg, this one looks like a piece of nicely formed dog poo. I wish I was kidding. The surface texture is much more rippled, suggesting the coconut inside, and the chocolate is also very dark, almost black. The ingredients list also make it a dark/milk guessing game. So tasting is the only way to find out. The first bite of this was more crumbly, since right under the shell is a layer of chocolate and coconut shavings, then under that is the coconut creme center, which also has the coconut shavings in it. This one is much heaver and more dense. The flavor that dominates here is the sweetness too, but it’s cut by the slight saltiness of the coconut. The center is this one is much nicer, as it’s dense, coconutty and very rich. I get pieces of the chocolate, which I love, and the texture with the chocolate is really nice. I can see why everyone fusses over the Krack egg as opposed to the other flavors in this line, it’s is truly addicting.
Cocoanut Creme Egg: Yet again with the odd misspelling in the name. Interesting. The ingredients say that this egg uses dark chocolate, but I see milk ingredients listed. Unwrapped the egg looks more like a rustic mess more than an egg, just like the other two. The enrobing is uneven at best. The smell is rich and very coconutty. The texture is thick, wet and chewy. The coconut has a sweet creamy flavor that’s very floral. I’m reminded of suntan lotion, but in a good way. The chocolate is sweet and compliments the coconut well.
A fun trio of eggs for Easter and were a refreshing break from all the main stream candies around. If you see them, they’re worth a try. They’ve been a regional favorite for a reason!

At long last! The Cadbury Double Decker bar! I’ve been wanting to try one of these ever since I read a review of them over at Chocablog. My excitement heightened when I had the bar in hand and read the description on the side: “milk chocolate with smooth, chewy nougatine and crisp crunchy cereal filling”. CANDY SWOON! I couldn’t tear it open fast enough.
Firstly, this bar is nothing to sniff at. It certainly lives up to its name, as it’s hefty and tall at 60g.
Unlike the Triple Decker I had from Australia, the Double Decker is not a “solid"bar. Instead it’s enrobed, hiding all sort of deliciousness underneath.
So what is under all that chocolate? The bottom half is like a Nestle Crunch bar and the top is fluffy and soft like the inside of a 3 Musketeers. smells sweet, milky of dried milk powder. The flavor is sweet, with a nice chocolaty taste from the coating, a sweet caramel flavor from the nougatine, and the malty carby flavor of the cereal. I also get some light coffee notes in here too.
Aside from the amazing flavor, the Double Decker is really all about the texture. It has a play of soft and crunchy, smooth and grainy…. a true master of contrast. It’s quite the mouthful too. It’s got a very substantial, hefty chew. It’s very satisfying and filling because of this.
Love, love this bar. It’s everything I was expecting it to be and more. Only downside is because of it’s heft, I have to limit myself with these. Or else become a Double Decker myself!

I’ve seen these nougats around and was finally able to try them at the Fancy Food Show this past June. Since then I’ve been on the hunt to track down a pack for an official review, and now my hard work has finally paid off. Some candy with worth the work, and these Golden Bonbon Nougats are just that in my book.
These nougats hail from Canada where they’re made from an original Italian recipe. You can tell the company takes pride in their work, and once you taste them, you’re easily sold.
The nougats come in a pouch of assorted flavors and textures, so there’s a little bit of something for everyone. Each nougat is individually wrapped, labeled and cut into cute little mini fingers. It’s really a great in terms of packaging, as you can easily root through the bag and pick out your favorites and give the others to friends. I did just that and my roommate happily shared these with me.
Crunchy Almond: Crunchy indeed! It’s hard, but not too bad. It took some working with the back teeth to get it to break, and then it softened up nicely. It has fresh nutty flavors of the almond and strong notes of honey and a little hint of maple flavor to it.
Crunchy Maple: This one is also really hard on the teeth. The flavor is much sweeter than the almond and the maple notes are powerful. Fake maple breakfast cereal comes to mind.
Soft Almond: The texture in this is much nicer. It’s soft, pillowy, has a good chew and the crunchy texture of the almonds compliment it nicely. The flavor in this is much more of an amaretto flavor than just almond with honey accents.
Soft Maple: Again, great with the texture. The maple flavor here is very prominent, and like the crunchy one, the slightly artificiality of the flavor reminds me of breakfast cereal.
Soft Orange: Strong bitter notes of orange as if the rind was used to make it. The honey in the nougat rounds out the sweetness and it’s a nice balance.
Soft Blueberry: The blueberry comes form dried blueberries in that’s mixed into the nougat along with the almonds. You don’t get the fresh, fruity flavor until you hit one and then there’s a great mix of blueberry and honey flavors.
Soft Cranberry: Wow, this is awesome! It tastes really like the whole thing was soaked in cranberry juice. Sweet, with a good sharp cranberry flavor and a tart edge.
Soft Cafe: The texture of this is a little firmer than the other soft ones I’ve had, much more thick and chewy. The coffee flavor is present, not too strong or too light. The coffee flavor itself is bitter and acidic. I’m not sure if I like the actual flavor of the coffee, but it does pair nicely with the nougat.
These disappeared pretty quickly and my roommate, who has such a small sweet tooth, kept asking if I had more of these long after I told her we’d finished them.
