Chuckles Jelly Rings Package

I love Chuckles! Not only is the name so lighthearted and cute, but they’re awfully tasty. I first had them a few years ago when I stumbled across one of the single serve packets. What drew me to them immediately was the promise of the licorice jelly. One bite and I was sold. A new Chuckles lover was born!

So imagine my surprise when I saw this bag of Chuckle’s jelly rings. I’ve never seen them packaged like this before, much less in a different shape. My curiosity was immediately piqued. As was my craving for ample licorice rings. I eagerly brought them home with me.

Opening the bag, I was surprised. Firstly, I didn’t get any orange rings and only one licorice one. Oh, sadness! And goodness, these things are big! A good inch across at least and 1/3 inch tall. The colors are intense and feel heavy in my palm. Taking my first bite, the texture is extremely thick and chewy for a jelly. It’s really satisfying.

Chuckles Jelly Rings

Green: Lime; with a flavor that walks a fine line between fresh, zesty, and floor cleaner.

Yellow: Lemon; bright, fresh and zesty with a nice sweet edge. Very nice.

Red: Cherry; with overpowering floral notes to it, it tastes more flowery than fruity. Somewhat medicinal.

Purple/black: Licorice; oh yum! Has a great deep licorice flavor with a great sweetness.

If I want Chuckles jellies again, I’ll go for the single serve package. It’s the same flavors, easier to find and I know how many licorice pieces I’ll be getting.

Fully Loaded Cookies & Creme Package

I keep seeing these “Fully Loaded” bars and I’ve been wondering what they’re all about. The packages stick out like a sore thumb with a very eye-catching but overly crowded design. I kept putting off trying them simply because I was intimidated by the sized the regular bars. Then I noticed these small ones at my local Wawa, so I picked up a few taking it as a sign I should finally give them a go. The variety of the minis is the “milk chocolate with cookies & creme and chocolate chips”. Sounds tasty!

The chocolate is a little square, about 1/2 oz. The one side is “fully loaded” with the extras and the other is the chocolate with the company name and brand printed on it. Talk about pumping all the advertising space available!

Fully Loaded Cookies & Creme Front

Fully Loaded Cookies & Creme Back

First thing I notice is how hard this is to eat since the “loaded” pieces keep falling off. It smells sweet and I’m reminded of an Oreo cookie, even though it’s been a long time since I’ve had one. Some things you just don’t forget.

Flavor is terribly sweet, and along with the subtle notes of the milk chocolate that manages to peek though all the sugar, that’s really all I taste. The “fully loaded” part really end up being more about texture than flavor, it adds a really pleasant crunch to the sweet, smooth milk chocolate base.

I’d eat this again if it was given to me. I’m sort of curious to try the other varieties now. As soon as I see mini sizes of them….

Kallari Chocolate Packages

Kallari is a chocolate company that is a chocolate cooperative dedicated to providing organic, sustainable, fair trade chocolate that I discovered them back in June at the Bucks Country Chocolate Show. They strive to create great tasting chocolate while cutting out the “middle man” to provide the cocoa farmers with income and knowledge they need to continue their practices. The packaging in the photo above, while outdated, shows the faces of the children from the Kichiwa people directly benefiting from your purchase. Talk about putting a face to the cause.

I bought one of the different types of chocolate bars that Kallari sells. They do things simply, with a selection of rich dark chocolates ranging from 70%, 75% and 85% cocoa content.

Kallari Chocolate

70%: The smell is intense with accents of chocolate, vanilla, coffee, and cinnamon. The taste is very vanilla with accents that are light and damp, like a cool forest. The middle of the flavor has slight vegetable taste, but it’s nice, not odd or out of place. The bar ends with strong notes of cocoa and coffee and a clean finish.

75% Roberto’s Recipe “extra dark chocolate with vanilla”: It has a nice color and subtle gloss. The snap is crisp, the beak is extremely clean and the sections are easy to break off evenly at the partitions. It smells very fruity with notes of red berries, raisins, raspberry, caramel and coffee.

The flavor is cool and a dry at first with light notes of vanilla. It then expands more allowing stronger notes of cocoa, caramel, vanilla and honey show through. The finish shows a peek of fruitiness. I get a little cherry/raspberry note as well as some moss in there. The aftertaste is extremely light and clean.

The texture is very smooth and not overly thick or slippery in the mouth. A beautiful 75% bar that’s great for beginners as the flavors aren’t acidic and it’s wonderfully chocolatey.

85%: The aroma is surprisingly sweet. There’s notes of cream, coffee, caramel and vanilla. The taste is first bland and dry but then notes of almonds and cream come forward and bloom on the tongue. The finish has light notes of cherries, raspberries, cream and vanilla. Really wonderful for such a high percentage bar.

With such a delicious range of chocolate and wonderful production practices, I can’t do anything but highly recommend these. Your conscience or your taste buds won’ be let down.

Enstrom Toffee Box

Toffee has always been a rare treat in my family. Something that I made each Christmas season with my Mom and sisters to give out as gifts. I haven’t had any other kinds, save for a Skor bar here and there. This is why I was pretty excited to give Enstrom’s Toffee a try. Was it going to stand up to the homemade kind I’ve been eating for years?

The toffee comes beautifully packaged in a box where inside it’s separated into large slabs. And I do mean large, as the the base layer is about 1/2 inch thick. The toffee has a nice rich, creamy, milky caramel color. There’s a generous amount of grated almonds bits on top were dusty and therefore a little messy. Reaching in to secure a corner for immediate tasting, I was pleased to find it was easily broken off.

Enstrom Toffee

The chocolate layer that sits on top of the toffee has a nice thickness: not too thin so the toffee shows though, but not too thick so it’s like cake frosting. The almonds are roasted and terribly fresh. They release nice nutty, salty, smoky flavors that compliment the sweet toffee and chocolate beautifully.

The toffee crunches fantastically in the mouth. It’s light, crispy, and not sticky. It holds its texture yet is soft enough so I don’t get any in my teeth. I get wonderful buttery, creamy, rich caramelized flavors right away. Combined with the nuts I’m reminded of caramel corn with it’s sweet/salty/nutty flavors. The flavor is so terribly fresh and flavorful, it could easily stand alone without the almonds and chocolate.

And speaking of the chocolate, it’s fantastic. It’s very chocolately, mildly sweet, and it holds it’s own when eaten separately. Yes, I did pick pieces of it off. Alone I was able to explore the sweet, creamy, slightly coconutty flavors. With the toffee, as it’s meant to be, it adds a little richness to it all and rounds out an already stellar combination of textures and flavors.

So did this live up to my expectations? Oh yes, it exceeded them in fact! I didn’t anticipate wanting to finish off my box, but it was so good I found myself picking at the toffee every chance I got. I can’t wait to get my hands on more and am extremely tempted to forgo the kitchen work this year and put in a few orders with Enstrom instead.

M&Ms Pirate Pearls Package

I know, I know. This is yet another limited edition that I’ve reviewing way past its prime. I found these in a kiosk in a local mall, and I couldn’t help but take the opportunity to snatch up a packet to review for the blog. Especially considering that I’m an M&M and a white chocolate lover.

These were released back in 2006 for the Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest movie sequel. I remember hearing about their original release and searching high and love for them like a mad woman. I finally found them in a randomly placed display in my local ShopRite.

The package design is odd and cluttered, but that seems to be a standard thing for these movie release M&Ms. The designs for the Indiana Jones Mint Crisp M&Ms packages are equally as ugly. I also find it amusing how Green managed to get all up close and personal with the attractive male leads. Lucky gal.

M&Ms Pirate Pearls

The colors of the M&Ms are pretty and are a fitting color scheme for white chocolate and pearls with varying off shades of white: pink, blue, yellow, white. Very pretty and delicate. I also love the designs on them, a skull, ships, spyglass, cannon, a hook. Very cute! The ingredients list is promising too, listing real cocoa butter, as white chocolate should. I’m happy to know that Mars is holding onto its standards.

The flavor is very interesting, because unlike all the other M&Ms, I can taste the candy shell on these (which tastes oddly flat and sweet). The white chocolate is nice and sweet with a mild cocoa butter flavor (which taste mainly fatty with a light cocoa flavor). I was a bit fatigued after eating the pack as the sweetness really built itself up and I felt like I needed a glass of water.

As a white chocolate lover I was hoping I’d like these more that I do. I like the format of the little bits in a candy shell, but I miss the creaminess a bar allows you to experience, especially with good white chocolate. The pieces alone aren’t enough to convey the delicate flavor for me. Regardless, if they were fresher I would have stocked up on a couple of packs. It’d be nice if these became a regular in the M&M line.
